BRF fruiting issues

Hey guys,
This will be my first post here, so i might as well let you know a bit about my set up before i get into my question. This is my first legitimate grow attempt, i have attempted before but in my younger days.
Right now i am running BRF cakes in half pint jars (long one's). It took almost 2 months for colonization of the cakes, even then i birthed a couple early just to see what would happen. (noob impatience i guess.)I might mention i had the cakes in an incubator at a constant 76-78. I have birthed 4 cakes and have gotten a few fruits off the cakes. I am running the poor mans pod for a terrarium with geolight and 2 bubble wands.
Here are my questions:
1. What could have taken so long for colonization? (my thought is too fine of verm, i thought what i bought to be too coarse so i sifted it)
2. What is better to use as a base in the poor mans pod? i have noticed postings about perlite.
3. How would you determine proper humidity and FAE? I read the tek and it calls for two holes but i cant put 2 & 2 together to determine the diameter of the holes. (Also a suspect in the limited fruits)
For now i will start there im sure i will have plenty more questions a my hobby progresses. I'm glad to be a contributing member of the community, instead of just a curious spectator! I appoligize in advance for any repeated or dumb questions i may ask .
Thanks for your help

As for your first question, I would say that your tall 1/2 pint jars are probably part (if not all) of your problem. My first grow I used the tall boys and it took a super long time to colonize. Last week I noc'ed some wide mouth 1/2 pints and already notice a huge difference in colonization speed.
I'll let someone with more experience answer the other questions. Either way, good luck with your new grow!

Thanks for the feed back guys. Sounds like the long jars are the culprit for the extended colonization time. i still noc'ed a couple long ones with unsifted verm to see if the extra air space helps at all.
My biggest concerns are my fruiting chamber. I'm finding more and more people using perlite instead of clay pellets on the fourms. Im trying to go as automated as possible for fruiting. my job requires me to be tied up for most of the day so fanning is pretty far apart, and pretty much just after my morning and bed time shower. Do i still need to mist with the poor mans tek? it says no need in the original write up.

Agree... if using the tall 1/2 pints, I prepare my mix extra fluffy and handle as little as possible to help avoid compaction.
I also use a little extra in my dry verm layer. (have to have the long needles on syringes)
I use a SGFC built to speck for cakes. If properly made it will regulate itself as far as humidity & FAE.
You will still need to mist & fan accordingly...

Did you prep your own jars or bought them pre-made? I ask because my first attempt took a lifetime and they were pre-made. I finally made my own and I still used tall jars and they colonized quickly.
