Been to a couple all inclusives. I really like them for rest and relaxation. Of the two that I attended, they approximately similar. The second time I went there was a slightly higher degree of "upsell", but it was pretty minor.

I went there on vacation a few years back my mom got a room in this really nice resort because she's a travel agent and gets good deals on that kind of thing sometimes
It was beautiful I love tropical places and that's one of the best I've been to
Plus free alcohol so I got smashed on pina coladas every day

That's the impression I got from all the Dominicanos I've met and spoken with around here over the years. What I can say is that they are some of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of knowing. Very polite indeed. Pictures I've seen of the nature over there is impressive. Really similar to Puerto Rican landscapes.
Also, it's not a rich country, but it's by no means a straight up depleted ghetto outside the resort areas. People usually associate the DR as being extremely poor for the simple fact that it's on the Island of Hispanola meaning they share a small island with Haiti, which is the poorest country in all the Americas/Carribean
The thing is, it's just like really any other 3rd world country or territory in the Caribbean. Everyone that has been there, but stayed at all-inclusive resorts never experienced what the DR really has to offer. It doesn't make me angry, but I wish more Americans when they traveled didn't stay and eat at places that feel most like America.
If you're gonna visit a foreign country, do it right. Learn about the local people, culture, food. That's my idea of a good visit to somewhere new. Not just lounging around a hotel pool all day drinking frozen alcoholic drinks. I can do that right here in south florida any time of the year.

I went and loved it, cant remember the name of the part we went to but its a less common tourist destination that is more jungley and green. Nice place, great time. We went out on a catamaran sailing around with flying fish jumping out of the water around us while we drank and danced on the front of the boat, among other fun adventures.

Agreed, I hated the resort it was beautiful but the rest of PR was wayyy cooler. Whenever I travel I go to museums,do geograshic activities, local restraunts, see every bit of nature available to me, I always drink whatever the locals drink etc. In fact I loved Puerto Rico so much I got a taino symbol for the warrior tatted on my back =P
Also I wasn't trying to dis Dominican but it's just a fact that they are more poor. My family still had a great time though. Fun fact: ALOT of Dominicans go to Puerto Rico for jobs and such. Which is sad because PR is really poor too.

I went there for a day once. It was New Year's Day, and it looked like they partied pretty hard the previous night. There were cars just strewn about where drunk drivers had crashed them and walked off. Everyone wants to sell you trinkets and braid your hair. DR is real poor.

The time i spent there was awesome, we would have a "platter" of "Presidente" (local beer) delivered to pool side...
of course bar was open 24/7, we would live by the bar
And at night like 4am, a restaurant was open too so we would get stuffed as well.... there was also "disco" in the resort....
Sea was aweosme... we would also go on quad bike tours... awesome time... and like outside weed was great too... good times
This was in times when Over Grow was still open so i posted my progress on there... donno what the republic is like now but i would love to come back
