Presoak Saw Dust For PF Tek Jars?

I am working on the PF Tek jars for the Shiitake recipe. This recipe substitutes Saw Dust for vermiculate. My question is should I presoak the sawdust and wood shavings and pc them before mixing them into the BRF and water for the jars?
If so How long do I soak? and How long do I pc?
If not then do I just PC the usual amount for PF Tek jars?

Could someone please give me some advice. I didn't think it was a difficult question.

Never tried this tek but I work with sawdust all the time. If it were me, I would hydrate the sawdust to field capacity ahead of time (i.e. squeezing a handful only gives you a drop). I work mostly with fuel pellets and typically mixing an equal volume of dried pellets and boiling water (with a pinch of gypsum) in a sealed container and waiting an hour for rehydration of the pellets gets you right in the ballpark. Regular sawdust would need to be soaked and drained accordingly. You'll want hardwood pellets or sawdust for Shiitake. For half pint jars, I think 1 hr. in the PC would be sufficient.

not many of us growing edibles use PF teks, so that's probably why you didnt get an answer. also, this forum isn't as active as the actives forum so you have to give it a little time to get a response. good luck with your shiitakes

According to RR's PF-TEK video you do everything exactly the same except for three things:
1.substitute vermiculite with sawdust 2.colonise for 2 weeks instead of 1 3.birth and rinse cakes, soak overnight, then place it back into the jar for in vitro pinning.
Presoaking the sawdust might cause the substrate to become too soggy. I have never tried so i am not sure what will happen, you should post your results.

I will definitely post the results. I'm just surprised there is so little in this entire web site on PF Teking wood lovers. Would you put anything else in your cakes, like say bran, cereal or some other additive? Not getting many responses on this issue in this forum?

its just not the most efficient way to get a lot of fruit. most people load up 4-6 lbs of substrate into an autoclavable bag and noc that up with grain spawn. or they use bulk pasteurized substrate like straw or sawdust. but pf tek is a good way to get familiar with new species so do post your results

Yeah, I'm not looking for lots of fruit, this is just an experiment. I'm gonna have to try the bag as well. let me know if you have any advice on this in any part of the PF Tek process. I figure it will be delicate an I need to be careful.

I would try it and see what happens! A lot of people modify PF cakes with crazy random things from worm castings to lake water. Cereal grains, rices and brans, wood chips, straw, gypsum, oyster shell, etc.

Why not load up the jars with sawdust/rice/additives and colonize them, fruit a few, and spawn the others to more sawdust?
That way you have good chance of success with the jars and a chance at pulling off a small bulk grow in a tray. You can simply put the tray in the sgfc with the other jars or place a plastic bag around it with a filter for gas exchange and leave it on a shelf.
Oh and another thing to consider, RR suggest birthing the cakes and washing off the dry vermiculite layer and then allowing light to penetrate the sides. Some people leave the vermiculite on but break it up with a fork, then spray it with water, and restrict the light on the sides of the jars. Another option is to gently break up the vermiculite layer, spray it, and then let light penetrate the sides. This would provide a mini-casing and still encourage in vitro pins ( a good thing for shitake in sgfc).
The only downside is not being able to give them a good dunk without birthing, you can always birth and dunk then place them back in the jars and recase with vermiculite.

Wow good info bro. I guess I would try a bunch of different thins, and I like the mini bulk idea. I think I will try cereal. Does the sugar in the cereal affect anything? Or does it matter.
