humidification with fish tank bubbler. 2 questions
    #2134884 - 11/25/03 12:08 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I built a terrerium out of a 55 gallon rubbermaid container, and chose to use a fish tank bubbler for humidification. To test this, I put a smaller container inside with water with a hose plunged in pushing air through the water with the bubbler. The humidity peaked betweeb 75 and 80 rh.

so I went to my local hydroponic store to pick up some geolite stones, and layered the bottom about 4 inches thick. I then filled the stoned with water until it was 1/4 inch from the top of the stones(about a gallon). Then I simply put the 1/4 inch hose under the rocks, and turned on the bubbler. the humidity now reaches 95-100 rh.

I made a hole for fresh air exchange, and I have a couple questions. with this hole open, I am sitting at an optimum 85-90 rh for fruiting. Will the casing effect the rh? and second, with a hole for fresh air exchange, will I still need to open the lid once or twice a day to lower co2 during fruiting?

You have the right idea.

Yes the casing will increase the humidity, but dont get too caught up on things being 100% perfect. Just make sure the temps are accurate, the casing doesnt dry out, and that you give it 2 good air exchanges during the day.
Its that simple!
Really!!

Oh, and lose the bubbler and just use the water on the bottom. Leave the hole if its small, small as in the size of a dime.. cover it back up if its big...big as in, like, the size of an apple.

All depends on how powerfull the pump is and the size of your container.
But yeah, he's right, if its a big pump then you might not even need to fan.

thanks for the help guys. the pump is 4.5 watt. Its for an aquirium. I think its powerful enough considering that it keeps the humidity at 85 with the 2x2 hole I put on the top of the container open. do you think there will be enough air exchange happening here?

I'd say scrap the geolite and cover up most of the hole. I use this method and find I average 98% humidity.

Also on my container there are some small holes under the handle area on the sides. I think this provides enough exaust with the air pump supplying the chamber with air.
