Whole Oats
    #21344429 - 02/28/15 04:19 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I picked up a bag of whole oats from the feed store today to make grain spawn.

What is a good way to prep these grains? I've prepped a lot of grain including rye, wheat, and WBS, but never whole oats.

I'm looking for people who have a good bit of experience with whole oats.

Hard boil for 30-35 mins. Drain/dry.
Boiling water, dump the oats in and let soak for 8 hours. Drain/fan dry.

I'd boil for your first run, pretty hearty grain so you'll be fine.

Are you saying to Hard boil for 30-35 mins. Drain/dry. Then, Boiling water, dump the oats in and let soak for 8 hours. Drain/fan dry.

Or is that two different methods. I've seen a couple of people say just boil drain and dry.

Sorry, 2 separate methods. I should have been more clear.

Boil for 40 minutes, strain, dry, load. I don't soak or rinse.

I'll try both times. I've gotten away from really rinsing other grains too.

Yeah, I hard boil for 30-40 minutes, then I peel the hull off and cut through the grain to see if it's hydrated.  Pretty  much how Van der greigen's write up explains it.

I almost wonder if it varies from supply to supply. If I hard boiled my current stuff for 40 mins I'd have blown grain goo. I'm at 31-32 mins. But you know what you're looking for, so report back and let us know what works for you.

Nice to meet you too.

Oh yeah, he does have a write up don't he? I'll give that a read. Thx

It sounds like whole oats have a wide range of forgiveness to the heat.

About how much prepped grain do you get from a quart of dry? I've been told it's about 2-2.5 prepped from 1 qt dry.

2 full dry quarts gets me 5 grain jars.

Wow,

After reading this my tek is spot on:

In my experience,

1 full qt of dry oats = 2-2.5 qts of prepped oats depending on how you fill them.

Measure out what you need and put them in a pot with plenty of water. Some will float, it's all good in the hood. Turn it on high and wait for a roaring boil then start your timer for thirty minutes.

Whole oat hulls are so thick that I've found they can withstand the heat without being stirred so I come back at around the thirty minute mark and inspect them. If they look like they still haven't puffed up give it another 10. There's a point where they visibly double in size and you'll see the water level decrease. When that happens I start stirring occasionally. You probably have about five minutes left. As soon as I see a popped grain I kill the heat and dump it.

They've been doing great for me so far,

:super:

I've been using the basic soak/simmer prep as for WBS. And a little gypsum. Will probably try the no soak method eventually though.

That gives me a good good feeling.

Just out of habit, I added gypsum to the boil. I just put water and oats in a pot, sprinkled on some gypsum and turned the heat on high. When it starts to boil, I'll start a 30 min timer and keep an eye on it.

Then, I'll drain and dry, load and PC. I'll update when they come out of the PC. Thx for all the useful tips and advice.

I have been getting satisfactory results from a 2 hour soak with 5% gypsum by weight. The oats are usually doubled in size by then. Follow that with a 10 minute boil, drain and then dry. I have been using whole oats for about 6 months now and don't think I will ever go back to using anything else for spawn.

Two full quarts of oats gave me exactly six 3/4 full jars last time.

Update, after 20 mins, they seem really plump. They seem like they'll start bursting any minute. I guess it's like rye though. Once the steam evaporation is done, I guess they won't be too wet?
