http://www.synthedit.com/

http://www.synthmaker.co.uk/

The particular .vst I created is def long gone. It had not practical purposes and was just an experiment. the oscillators were low quality.

Some cool things and communities to check out on the hardware side of it:

http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/

http://mutable-instruments.net/

http://casperelectronics.com/

http://hackmeopen.com/

http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/

http://code.google.com/p/tinkerit/wiki/Auduino

http://www.narrat1ve.com/

http://www.matrixsynth.com/

http://www.burnkit2600.com/arduinoboy/

All contain lots of learning, super awesome projects of varying difficulty, samples and demos, history, and very helpful communities. I've put together a lot of these and learned a lot of concepts through the builds that I could then easily translate into new original projects. There are also two really good books I'd suggest looking up. Handmade Electronic Music is a fantastic "hardware synthesis for dummies" kind of book, with basics like using 555s or other ICs to make simple oscillators and eventually providing interesting prompts for your experimentation. Since you're also into VSTs, check out Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook if it still can be found. Hope this wets your whistle!

EDIT: lol just realized this was a mega dug up thread. Hopefully someone finds the links useful.

I tried everything else I could find and listed them here;
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LDOjzlqdf2gAbl0VNcpjKxQ70-Yox5Y80FZGNeb3qmk/edit?usp=sharing
If there is anything that you want to check out scroll to the right on the list to see what legitimate links are available.
There's about another 60 free synths to add to the list that I have found in the last week or so, they might get added on Sunday. To check for new additions anytime go to row 9 on the list above and follow the link.
