Cold shocking blue oysters

So I have a block of blue oyster sub that's been fruiting poorly. I harvested an okay flush from it the other day, but I want to see it explode. Today, I wrapped the block in a new shopping bag and set it outside in the snow. I'm gonna leave it there until I go to bed, and then bring it inside. Will this trigger massive pinning? I've also never read anything conclusive on whether you should cut the bag before or after pinning.
Am I on the right track here?

you didnt give us any details about the block so its hard to tell why you didn't experience a big flush...what is the substrate? did you buy it or make it? what conditions have you kept it in?

Okay sorry. I've posted about it before. The block was originally a back to the roots kit that I expanded to some cardboard. I expanded the original kit after I pulled a flush from it, so this last flush is the only one I've gotten since I expanded it. By fruiting poorly I mean lots of aborts and long stems. I also tried printing a mushroom from the last flush and I didn't get a spore print even after 4 days.
I've read that blue oysters like colder temps and that a really cold night is a big pinning trigger. The block still has plenty of moisture, too.

oh, yea. i remember reading that. i haven't had good results fruiting on cardboard by itself. long stems indicate low light or high co2. they abort whenever the conditions arent right

Well I'm getting a clone of the fungi perfecti blue oyster here pretty soon, and I'm switching to cottonwood/bran substrate. Hopefully that will improve things.

cool. just remember, if you supplement with bran, you have to sterilize

Uh oh. I made a bunch of bags of kings with bran and just pasteurized. They're colonizing fine, luckily.
I plan to switch to liquid inoculant and do my edibles strictly in bottles and autoclavable bags.

keep an eye on them and remove any that show signs of contamination immediately. the odds are against you, but it might work....

Hopefully the kings will be aggressive enough to beat the contam window. It's colonizing just fine at least. I'm not too worried about mold because I did properly pasteurize, and this strain of kings seems to have no problem with bacillus.

the problem with bran, though, is that it contains bacterial endospores on the bran itself. since pasteurization doesn't kill endospores, you're basically introducing contamination to the substrate when you supplement and don't sterilize. always a chance the mycelium will win, though.

Yeah I really should have thought of that. I've already watched these kings completely overrun bacillus though, so I'm hoping they will win.

I kinda did the same thing as you - Started with a Back to Roots Kit as my spawn and used brown paper pasteurized in the oven as Substrate. Only my spawn already did two somewhat mediocre flushes. Here were my results:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21282968
I brought them back inside hoping it would colonize some more more - but it hasn't -- I see some specs of mold in one of the holes I drilled - so I may just try to do a cold shock with water dunk and hope I can get a second flush before it the block goes bad.
On the other hand - about three weeks ago - I did a shredded cardboard with a fresh back to roots kit as span - it seems like it might be ok - but it is hard to tell from the mostly opaque white 5 gal bucket - was hoping to use it as spawn for more oyster buckets/bags - will post the results...
