So this is strange
    #21341082 - 02/28/15 12:15 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I've been making LCs and these two jars had a bacterial contamination so I put them outside in the shed. They have been there for about a week in 30 degrees Fahrenheit or less. The Pleurotus pulmonarius - Phoenix oyster froze in no time but it's the Hericium Erinaceus - Lion's mane  isn't frozen at all or showing signs. Can anyone explain this is that the mycelium is heating it self enough to keep the water from freezing? Like  I said strange.

Maybe Lions mane is able to produce more glycerol or some other metabolites that have an antifreeze effect.

Amazing; were the jars all in the same place as each other, or was the Lions Mane closer to a window(sunlight), or hot water pipe, or something?

Are those spores or mycelial growth at the bottom of the Hericium Jar? Does anyone know if spores can release glycerol or metabolites?

They've been in the same spot together for the same amount of time and  it's mycelial growth. It was started with mycel scraped off the top of the petri dish and they are both the same recipe.

I have noticed Hericium erinaceus LC gets really dark the longer it ages, it also has a rather pleasant smell when you open the container. Could be producing interesting compounds.
