5-grain spawn bag. Advice please.
    #21339030 - 02/27/15 03:38 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I have two 2lb five-grain spawn bags. No joke it has been over 2 months since I inoculated the bags, and they don't even look to be halfway through colonization.... there's some mycelium and its definitely not contaminated yet

I'm starting to wonder if I should break up the bags to spread the mycelium? The company says not to break up the bags because the grains will have truble reforming. Not sure what I should do.

Its extremely tough typing this on a shitty phone. Please give some help.

Hate towards growbags can be talked about elsewhere please. I already know the deal.

I also just started (last night) leaving the bags wrapped in a warming blanket. The filter patches can still breathe though. It definitely upped the condensation in the bag, which idk if that's good or ba

first off pics please
2nd off you should have definitely massaged the bags when they were 30_50% colonized.
3rd uncolonized grains on the top of grow bags will contam eventually if you dont have the right filters even if sterilized properly.
5 grains 1 grain- doesn't make the slightest bit of a difference

4th dont double post edit your original post.
this is a 3lb wbs bag about two months old i made it to dry

Grow bags for spawn are pretty decent but your going to experience less contams with jars. Using growbags to actually grow fruits, is an entirely different story. Id stay away from the warming blanket and just go with an outside heat source to keep it at room temperature 68-75.

edit...That sucks bw lol ...almost their:frown:

It sucks but not to much,I already have way to much spawn. i was gonna give away that bag to a friend for a mono anyway.
i spawned that bag to unpasteurized potting soil at a 8:2 spawn ratio

they make different filters for fruiting in spawn bags and for grains.
you can fruit in either but should only make grain spawn with the smaller micron sized filters
I dont think my contamination rate increases with bags. If your sterile procedures are correct either way is just as effective. The shape of your spawn container shouldn't determine if you get contams.
"Using growbags to actually grow fruits, is an entirely different story."
using growbags for fruiting is my preferred method so i hope your not saying they are bad for that use.

Sorry, I'm using the worst cell phone on the planet. I tried to edit my OP but when I'd try adding more text it kept spazzing out and deleting other text.

I can't say for sure how far through colonization the bags are, but I'd guess between 15-30% colonization.

Here's the best photo I could take. I don't know why the picture flips when you click the thumbnail wtf..

EDIT:
My house already stays between 65-72 degrees. So I guess I just won't use the heating blanket anymore. I've read that the bags would colonize if temps were at 85 which is why I thought I'd try the blanket as a heat source.

I inoculated both bags on December 22nd of last year.

So, I should break up the grain in the bags right meow?

Figured the photo wouldn't help. That's the best I'll be able to upload though. I have nothing to take a higher quality photo with.

All I can say is that the small areas with mycelium growth look uncontaminated. It's all a clean white color. No yellow or any odd colors at all.

Still unsure what to do.,. Break up bags now or que?

Oh no I like bags too. Way easier than jars for the cook and transfer. But ive kinda gotten out of them for spawn as of now. To many contams for me. Maybe I just suck lol

Ive had good luck with .2 for spawning and fruiting. Working with the 5 um filter large bags for the first time for fruting and it seems ok so far just haven't seen a great outcome yet. But I think that was a substrate issue. Still rolling on it.

I just broke up one of my two bags. Left the other one for now, just in case.

I just don't understand how in 2 months it has barely colonized? Why is it going so slow? I inoculated on December 22nd 2014.

I have 0 hope of these producing anything after waiting this long. So I won't be mad if they fail.

And after breaking up one of the bags it's safe to say they haven't colonized more than 10 percent at very best.. IN 2 MONTHS!

After two months I would have definitely broken up the bags. Once u get a substantial amount of colonization like a half dollar size. Or more than a couple quarters around the bag u can shake or mix up.

U should see a lot of growth in around 3 days after you do this. Looks like you have small grow bags with wild bird seed and an injector port. Left bag in the pic has growth from what I can see.

if you injected with spores then you had to wait a few days - few weeks for teh sores to even germinate. YOu did the right thing by massaging one nlike preschooler said you should see the myc recovering in 2-3 days

Both bags definitely have growth. Not much growth, but it's there.

I massaged both bags yesterday. Made sure all the areas with mycelium got spread around more.

It has been 1 week and 2 months since I injected the bags. In that time the bags have colonized maybe 8% at very best. Do you think these bags should still be able to fully colonize and fruit?

I know I am new here, but I'm throwing my .2 anyway. Where did you get the grain in the first place? Any chance it was treated with preservatives or even anti-fungals?

If the bags aren't contaminated. Yes. But i would mix them with another (pasteurized)substrate like coco coir/vermiculite or straw/manure. Or a mix of all four if it colonizes.

Stand the bag all the way upright. Don't leave the filter patch tucked under the bag.... needs to breathe.

Welcome:sunny: I highly doubt it since its a grow bag obviously bought from a mushroom supply vendor. But ya never know:shrug:
