Contamination on pasteurized horse manure
    #21338518 - 02/27/15 01:41 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your help and information on this site. I've learned a lot here and am grateful for these forums. I have grown cubensis on pasteurized horse manure a few times successfully and thought that I was on easy street. However, I lost the last few batches and am starting to have problems again. In those last set of bins, I noticed fungus gnats for the first time. I also noticed that the mycelium never fully took off due to what seems like bacteria from insufficient pasteurization. All the mycelium turned yellowish/brownish and everything smelled funky, so I tossed it all out. Since then, in these later batches, the bins that were pasteurized hotter and for longer resulted in mycelium that took over everything quickly. But now I'm concerned again because it's been a month since I mixed the WBS (inoculated from my LC) in and I'm seeing something that I saw earlier in the failed bins. There are chunks of manure here and there that never grew mycelium, and they are covered in tiny white dots like before. These dots are even apparent underneath the mycelium in other places. In addition, I recently sprinkled some "mosquito bits" on top that are supposed to kill the gnats, and I think they brought in some new contaminants because the bits are growing something on them. Also, there seem to be small areas scattered evenly all around that look somewhat blue green under the mycelium. Sort of like the color of a bruised mushroom, perhaps trich. Maybe my LC is contaminated? The jars of WBS looked clean, and these are forming after the mycelium took over, and I'm still without a first flush. Could someone with experience able to say what I'm dealing with?

Here's the white dots:

Here's the growth from the bits that are now spreading up the side of my bin, in hundreds of tiny black spots like mold:

Here's the blue stuff:
