Ideas for completely removing all aphids from salvia cuttings
    #21333881 - 02/26/15 04:05 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

My salvia plants have been decimated by aphids they picked up while growing outdoors last summer.  I thought I was going to lose them all, but through extreme intervention (daily picking/spraying, and discovering a very cool and effective device that uses water pressure to spray the undersides of the leaves and get in all the cracks) I was able to save (so far) one each of my three strains.

They are now putting up substantial new growth (which is slowly becoming infested), but the new stems are almost big enough to cut and root.

So, what I need to figure out is how to not pass the infestation on to the next generation.  This is made tricky by the sensitivity of cuttings and the need to keep them moist.

My first idea: try and drown them by completely submerging the cuttings in water for a few hours (days?) but I'm not sure how the cuttings will respond, or if this will even kill them.

I'm hoping someone has some creative ideas as I'd hate to lose them.  Thanks in advance!

I saved a few of my salvias from the very same aphid problem. Every morning for about 1 week or so I'd go
and spend about 15 minutes scanning every nook and cranny for aphids. Using a pair of fine tweezers to kill them.

I've also had luck with neem oil for bigger infestations. Being persistent, but it never seems to get all of them.

If you've got them inside, I'd just start picking them off every day any time you get a chance.
It's also a good way to get up close and form a kind of relationship with the plant. You'll be rewarded.

Try ortho insecticidal soap. I have used it on my orange tree and they seem to affect all new growth. I used that soap and it really helps. It's not an end all and should be used regularly.

Thanks for the replies, but I've been picking/spraying with soap for awhile now and it just isn't getting rid of them.  They reproduce so damn fast.

I'm looking for creative ideas on how to wipe them off a small cutting entirely so I can just get rid of the infested plants and hopefully be rid of them.

Hmm, seems to have worked for me.

Here's a "creative" idea. Get some of those ultrasonic plug-in pest repellers and surround your cuttings with them, :stoned2:

Haha, I'm not sure they'd work on insects, but I did get one to keep the cat from using my garden beds as a litter box.  Works pretty well!

I am in love with Rosemary oil for my general pest control! Went and bought a 1oz bottle for a few bucks at the health food store. Put like 5-10 drops in a good sized spray bottle and spray away. No chemicals, and it smells way better than neem IMO.

Random idea off the top of my head here, and I'm not sure if it would work. It might even damage the plant, IDK I've never done this. But, what if you were to get a paper towel or something and get some rubbing alcohol and rub down the leaves a little. I imagine the alcohol would kill the aphids and even dry out and kill the eggs, especially with a few applications, I'm just not sure if it would damage the plant...

"Ultrasonic pest repellers are electronic devices that emit high-frequency sounds
designed to repel, injure or kill household pests, such as rodents and insects.
Whether they're actually effective at doing so has been disputed by testing
labs and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC)."

Just saying...if you're really bored one day, give it a try.

I've heard a lot of good things about rosemary oil. Alas, I've never tried it though.

I Sometimes make a: Tea.

Its actually more like pepper mace.  you take a few cloves of garlic, sliced, 6-10 black pepper seeds, 2-3 chili-arbol, habanero, or ghost pepper (something HOT), powdered chinese hot mustard, and 1/4 tsp mace. and make a strong decoction tea, strain well

within 1-2 hours you will see pests die, fall off, and run away from your plants. within a week or so infestation is gone.

the pepper mace has worked for me, with cannabis plants that have had aphids, flys, and red-mites. I sometimes add 1/2 of a cheap cigar to the tea, depending on the plant. Please note, I do not use tobacco spray, on plants I intend to consume. Nor do I reccomend that on anything you intend to ingest.

good luck.

Not a bad idea either

I have used my tea-spray on citrus trees, for citrus-scale mites too. You still have to manually remove the citrus scalemites, but it keeps them from wanting to stay. The nasty thing about some pests (Aphids and mites), is that they can remain in the soil and attack stem parts and roots that are under-soil too. I like the Tea recipe, because it will soak into soil too.. and the volatile oils will soak into some of the soil substrate too. I do not like using (Insecticidal chems) on my plants unless I have to. try giving my recipe a try. most people have the ingredients in their spice rack.

Speaking of which, is mace a spice you would find in the spice cabinet? The only reference to mace I can think of is the personal defense spray, which I assume is made of the same stuff. What exactly is mace? A sort of pepper or spice?

It's funny that mace came up in here
I just cooked up some scallops, seasoned with mace.

It's the outer coating of nutmeg.

A systematic pesticide along with repeated applications of neem oil and/or a mixture of soap and 99% isopropanol would work.

Just make sure to wait 6-12 months after application of the systematic pesticide to ingest any part of the plants.

Its a horrible, last-ditch way to completely kill everything from the inside out (systematically). Some people use it for scale on cacti, but unfortunately it takes a long time for the toxins to leech out of the treated plants.
