If its fully colonized then yes birth it. Those are knots forming.

If it isn't fully colonized, birth it anyway.
Knots don't form until it's pretty sure it can't grow any more.

Sometimes i let it go and it finishes. I have a theory on why it does that. I think "full" colonization as the main pinning tropisim is an oversimplifycation of what is actually happening.

Once the substrate is fully colonized by healthy mushroom mycelium, the substrate stops generating heat, and pinning is triggered. For the best pinsets, a pinning strategy must be comprised in order to maximize the pinning triggers potential effects on the genetic stock of the mushroom culture being fruited, environmentally, by balancing the control of all major pinning triggers at once in favor of the fruiting parameters of the specie of fungus that is being fruited.

The colonizing/colonized media of mycelia, never stops generating heat.

I used to subscribe to the belief that pinning before full colonization meant contamination. It seemed to make sense since the uncolonized portion would not be available and thus full colonization of available substrate was achieved. But then I started to observe partially colonized agar plates pinning before all the available media was colonized. I could also see that the uncolonized media was not contamed with anything. I still believe that the response triggered by what most people would refer to as full colonization is still a big one. But we have misidentified what it is. This observation, along with others has changed my view. Further discussion with other members here has reinforced my position. Think about it like this, in nature do polypores ever fully colonize their substrate of choice? I would like to see that. I believe that you would be hard pressed to find an example of any species fully colonizing all available substrate in the wild before pinning.

Pinning before full colonization of indoor mushroom substrates is also a symptom of high levels of gas exchange.

I never thought about it like tht.. Your absolutely right though. Nothing is ever fully colonized in nature before fruiting.

No, fruits are the result of fresh air exchange. Not too much gas exchange. Too much gas exchange would result in a dry substrate.
Plz correct me if im wrong.

Except in a no pour agar plate there is rather little gas exchange. I have also done different configurations of grain jar lids some with double the GE of others. What I have found is that colonization was more rapids in those ones (I actually did this to test a RR statement to that effect and found he was correct) yet invitro pinning was zero issue. I have also run no pour plates with zero gas exchange and still got pinning.
Here is a plate not fully colonized that had been pinning for some time. The amount of GE is very little.
