Too much moisture on the surface of my mono?
    #21334242 - 02/26/15 05:33 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I haven't had a lot of luck with monotubs so far, except for using them as FC's for bulk cakes, not sure why but I get great results using them that way.  When I use a monotub as intended, I always end up with really small fruits and I have the feeling this tub is going the same route.

MS > WBS > CVG BULK

I use Fooman's steeping method to prep the wbs, innoc with a LC I proofed on several plates of agar first and let it colonize fully.  I use most of FrankHorrigan's methods for preparing the bulk sub.  Pasturize in jars in a water bath for an hour while keeping a close eye on the temperature.

Line with a fresh trashbag, pour in half the bulk, pour in the spawn, mix and then let it run for 7 days.  Put it in fruiting and 2 days later it has a ton of water beads all over the surface which are slowly dissipating over the last couple of days (I think it's been about 9 days total now in fruiting, 2 days pinning)

Just have this feeling they are going to mature small and early again, no bueno.  What am I doing wrong? am I not evaporating that surface moisture quickly enough?

1 pic with flash to illustrate the amount of water beads

Thanks in advance

It looks good to me. I wouldn't mess with it.

thought I had it pretty well dialed in, not to mention it is super dry in my house ATM since my humidifer is down for the count so I was actually nervous about that factor and it drying out.

Can the bottom holes be too tight? mine are REALLY FRICKIN' TIGHT

Also, how about popping out the top poly for a while to try and dry up some of that surface moisture? i'll tip it if I have too but I don't like doing that just cause you have to hold the entire sub down while you do it and it can be a pain

Yeah, loosen your bottom poly a little bit, but I agree that your sub looks pretty good.  It will appreciate more FAE, though.

Looks okay to me too. Popping out the top poly may give you more FAE which can help make bigger fruits.

Which CVG recipe are you following? If you're using 5 qts of water like he does, that could be part of the issue. I don't usually recomand a fan in the room, but a really wet sub may need more FAE.

5 quarts is always too wet for me and I end up adding like another quart and a half almost of verm in the past.

this time I started at at 4 1/4 quarts water and it was nearly perfect right there with 1 brick and 1 quart verm.

ok, so I think i'll pop out the top poly overnight, replace it in the morning and loosen the bottom poly slightly at that time and keep an eye on it, see how it goes.

Thanks for the help peepz!

I'll get these monos down eventually

Yeah, I had remembered someone mentioning that as their alternative amount for the recipe and it was pretty spot on I think, if my grasp of field capacity is fairly accurate lol
