Oh well.  My guess is what koods is seeing that glows is probably myco piss.  I bet the rumor was  started somehow by the fact that lsd glows under uv and falsely verified by people shining a blacklight in their ammonia filled monotub.  Thanks everyone you saved me money!

Actually, I do believe some of the vitamin B compounds do fluoresce, and they are probably found in that yellow fluid you find near myc. However, what you see in my picture glowing are grains of sand.

Also, ammonia? That definitely does not fluoresce.

Why do you think they do not exist outside ofthe PNW  My first experience with them was in virginia  Perhaps it was a closely related species that the locals refer to as liberty caps.  I had no knowledge of wat the spore color was supposed to be, so I just picked a bunch off of the ground and shoved them in my mouth along with the other dumbdumbs I was with and happened to not die and have a blast.  I later realized how monumentally stupid that was which brought me to find this site arond 98.  The appalacian trail goes from georgia to maine.  There are some places in virginia that have elevations of over 5000 ft.

well... were they active, these "libs" you refer to?

Yeah, that sounds like SW Va. Fucking far though unfortunately. I knew someone that went to Va Tech that have talked about picking mushrooms while at school. Sounded more like caerulipes though and that had to be at least 30 years ago. Driving up 81 through that area was always the place I've thought would be the perfect place to find libs since I've read that they have been known to be in VA. I also know what you mean about camping with no rain and waking up soaking wet.

It also sounds like someone needs to go look in NW NC too cause I know that kind of area extends across the border. I guess I need a vacation anyway.

I can also second that it seems no one on the east coast is interested in mushrooms. Many people I talk to say that they've never even seen a mushroom. And everyone, even the hippy types say that it's impossible to identify them. They say, "even mushroom scientists end up eating the wrong one and die." I can't tell you how many times I've heard that. The only people that know anything about mushrooms seem to be from WV, and they only know of morels.

.... It's funny how people were picking mushrooms 30 years ago but these days with all the info on the internet which everyone has- the majority of people spend their time in their basement on facebook so they will never experience of the great outdoors.  i hate it really and itsnot just about the mushrooms or getting high  I am saving up for some some good military grade gear to do the hiking thing again.  Unfortunately it seems shroom detector wont be in my inventory though heh

technology has made many lazy..that's true.

You won't find me in the basement most of the year, we hike and camp year round.

Butting in a little just to say get a mushroom guide to add to your arsenal.  If you're a hiker and you're a forager too, you're a happier healthier hiker.  Edibles are good for you and relatively easy to identify.  My two cents for what it's worth.

At first I was like "Oh nice one New Scientist, good info", then I read futher and.."Boooo to you New Scientist and Nicole Anasto, god damn kill joys".

"We can now detect if you have been eating magic mushrooms, and if you have been then we can punish you accordingly.....because they are dangerous".  Yeah, dangerous because you can get punished for eating them!

Cool, fluorescent dyes can be made from schrooms  Guess UVA spectrum works best emited by most LEDS as fluorescent dyes?
For more power fluorescent bulbs made from Wood's glass can be used like these:

Though I am not sure if this would fluoresce, reishi would be a good mushroom to collect metabolites from.  Every cultivated sawdust block I've made was leakier than a clap-dick.  Neat idea even though mine fails.

I tried putting a bunch of different reishi species under the black light to see if I could see any distinguishing features. I found none, there is no real glow to speak of. The metabolites may vary from the fruitbody though so who knows.

I've put mushroom tea under backlight and it doesn't fluoresce. It's possible it would only work in specific solvents.
