Casing too wet: What to do?
    #2133104 - 11/24/03 05:53 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

My foaf's 2 casings have been in incubation at 87 *F for over two and a half weeks. Only one shows the slightest sign of mycelium growing on top and it is VERY faint. He believes the casing is way too moist, has he lost or is there something he can do? Also, if he has to do things over he's got a couple of cakes left, he wants to know what the correct moisture level should be. Thanks!

All is not lost. It rains outside right? The mycelium can handle it. Two and a half weeks is a long time to incubate a casing. It may just look really wet because it's so warm (incubation temps). If you can I would recomend using some kind of lid. The excess moisture will condense on the lid. Pull it off quickly and pour it off. I've pulled literaly half a cup of water out of one and a half sq. ft. casings every day for a week. If your strain is not sensitive it will be fine; just adjust the moisture any way you can. When I grow B+, they take all kinds of neglect and abuse and still put out 9 inch fruits even in overwet conditions (they just can't stand by themselves, he he he).

Substrate layer? You mean top casing layer right? The top layer is about 1" thick (60/40), and the substrate layer below is almost 1.5" thick, and underneath that is a straight verm layer of about 0.5" thick. Also, after my foaf went to look at one of his casings he's not sure if what he's really seeing is cobweb and not mycelium poking thru. I know pix would really help in this case but my foaf is damn broke and can't seem to get his hands on a digital camera. Maybe I'll buy him one for Christmas or something....heheheheh

Your casing layer is way too thick! Read the faq. You might be able to just dump off the excess and do a little patching.

yea i recently found out the hard way that the top casing layer is only supposed to be 1/4 of the thickness of the layer of mycelium
