Jar filter issue
    #21332214 - 02/26/15 10:02 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I had an issue with injection points and had to remove some of the filter to inoculate.  These were just a few random jars I was working with.
Because I didn't have caulk at the time, I left the jars in my old glovebox for a day or two with a hole or two open (think 3 holes around the lid for air flow, originally covered by filter).

I don't see any off growth, and the jars have only been cookin' for a couple days with noticeable mycelium.

Should I just ditch them and save myself the trouble?
Should I save a couple in the old box and try to move some of the mycelium to agar for isolation and wedging?
Wipe tops with alcohol and cover with band-aids while I wait for pore tape?

I have more jars that will be properly done up today, so not an issue to just toss them - although I'd prefer to save a couple.

Whatd'ya think?

You already went through the effort of carelessly inoculating, might as well await results and cross your fingers for the best.  I would recommend using polyfil, tyvek, or self healing injection ports next time.  Im not sure about caulking but dont think it is the most tested true solution.  Never expose your jars to open air contaminates during the injection and initial colonization process though.

Good luck =)

Yeah it certainly wasn't my intention, I just decided to go through with it anyway and see what happens. I'm using RTV high temp for injection points with .02 micron filter disk over a few smaller holes.

Just wanted to know whether I should even bother with the screw ups.

Thank you.
