PF Tek update - Bacterial / Mold Contamination?
    #21331324 - 02/26/15 02:01 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I'm re-posting this here, I figured more people will see it.

Most of my jars are about 100% colonization, but now I'm starting to see small mold colonies near the dry verm layer, as well as what appears to be bacterial formation. In pretty much every jar .

I suspect it's because I didn't fill the jars all the way with the dry vermiculite layer, I left about 2-3mm of space from the rim. I also picked them up and moved them 3-4 days after inoculation to take pictures. It appears that the substrate shrunk as the mycelium grew, allowing the dry verm layer to slip down the sides of the jars, and that would also be a reason I'm seeing little mold colonies.

Here are the pictures:

Are these jars trash? Every jar has these little yellowish-milky splotches that I thought were just BRF and verm stuck to the sides of the jars.

I guess these could be thrown into an outdoor patch as I originally intended. I really wanted to see them in an SGFC though =[

Thanks for the help!

When the cakes are fully colonized they shrink. Sometimes when they're moved the dry verm layer sinks below.

Looks normal.
