If the cakes are dry then YES, dunk them for 24 hours. While they are submerged you should really try to get a handle on that gnat situation tho... You can also put some vinegar in a few 20oz bottles and put them somewhat near your SGFC to help counteract those pests (they will fly in and drown).

If one or more of the cakes fall apart ditch those ones.

gnats lay eggs in your substate, which hatch into larva that feed on the nutrients in your substrate. then morph into gnat flies which then start the cycle again. they are relentless bastards. let your cakes dry out as much as you possibly can before watering! and as stated in a previous comment, dunking/watering WILL make your problem worse.

I just had a nasty gnat infestation....seemed like it happened overnight.  I have a lot of house plants and they just come with the territory dealing with soil.  I hoped they wouldn't find my "semi sealed room"  but they did.

That was in my sgfc....gnat doorways from hell.  This is yet another reason I'm going monotub...far fewer holes and they aren't open for bugs to just walk on in.

The Universe has a much greater imagination than we do, which is why the real story of the universe is far more interesting than any of the fairy tales we have invented to describe it. -Lawrence Krauss

Whenever you're feeling stupid....just remember....there's still people out there who think the earth is 6000 years old and man rode dinosaurs.

How long did dinosaurs roam? The time gap between stegosaurus and t-rex is longer than the time gap between t-rex and man.

If geologic time was compressed into a year....man would be born on December 31st at 11:00 pm.

I just pulled a bottle out of my monotub today that had a nice accumulation of 5-10 gnats, so.... don't think a mono will solve your issues.

keep your kitchen clean of dirty dishes, and clean your garbage disposal. Don't let garbage accumulate. Add a small secondary trashcan in your kitchen for organic material that will quickly rot so that it doesn't sit in your big trashcan for days, developing contaminates. Add sand or dichotomous earth to houseplants.

I've thrown fly paper traps in my SGFC before, and they worked great. More effective than vinegar traps, in my experience. and they are cheap, like $2 for a box of 6.
