Question, need quick answer!
    #21325061 - 02/24/15 08:36 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

In pastywhyte's agar tek. After the agar is pc'd and cooled down and you remove it from the PC are you suppose to turn them upside down and let them sit for a week to shed condensation before inoculation?

Would you do this in any agar tek?

Side question: Can peat moss take the place of Coir in substrates? Not casing, I know it can in casing, but what about substrates? Hell if I can find the answer on here.

Yep definitely flip your mini plates before they cool, otherwise they will solidify and get stuck to the bottom of the pastyplate.

A lot of the peatmoss that you buy from the hardware store has Trich added to it. It can help plants.

So make sure that you are PC'ing any peatmoss that you use.

Actually you wanna pasturize Peat not sterilize. Need to add hydrated lime to bring the PH up a bit too

But Ive only used as casing, I wouldn't use it interchangeably with coir no.

But Im not sure why though haha.

Damn, I let them cool in the pc for a day. I guess there screwed. What about water. Should I still flip them for a week, will I be able to use them at all?

So you say yes, Peat Moss can be used as a substrate but needs PC'd to sterilize, not pasteurized. Just mix it up and add some coffee grinds and earthworm casting and a little gymsom and wala it substrate. Right?

Wait a minute, pasteurize...not sterilize? mix it and then pasteurize?

No. Peat moss needs to be proper pasturized, not sterilized.

It has no nutrients, unlike coir. I wouldn't use it in substrate.

You can use coir as casing or substrate, peat just casing.

Even if you added coffee grinds and earthworm castings? that's not enough nutrients?

Im actually not sure. Here is an old TC quote but its maybe 8 years old

"peat moss has got about ZERO nutes, coir on the other hand has got quite some.

you can utilise coir as a substitute to a proper bulk substrate such as manure or straw,
but keep the peat out it wont do you ANY good.

as for pastueirsation/sterilisation ive been pasteurizing my casing layers for about a year now,
before ive sterilized them. i cannot tell a difference, both works very good."

I guess Ill have to do some experimenting.

What about the agar. If I reheat it can I still flip it before it cools down. If so how long do I leave it upside down? Won't it stick to the lid?

I was joking about the plates. I have no idea if you should flip them.

Peat needs to be sterilized IMO. I understand that it has no nutes, but most companies add tric to the peat. Past Vs Sterl I vote sterilizing any day of the week. You are not going to hurt it by taking it up to 15PSI for 30 mins. The good bacteria will not fight off any trich that is added to the peat if you only pasteurize.

"Now you just gotta PC them for 40-45 mins. Done. Be sure to bring the pressure up slowly as to prevent the agar from boiling up. I like to leave them in the PC overnight to cool, this helps keep the condensation down. Then I when remove them they go straight into my SAB."

I pour my plates but this is a quote from the tek, I think your plates are fine as is dude

I dont know why you would tell him that he almost tossed his plates and started over!

I have always been told to pasturize peat casings . I have gotten away with sterilizing it in the past though, so I know it works, but Ive posed the question of past vs sterile before and the TC's say better to pasturize

Rock on mushpunx. I will inoculate and give life tomorrow?

As for the peat, I will sterilize it and add nutes. If it works I don't have to order coir off the net. Its not like you can buy it from a local store like you can peat, coffee and worm castings.

Dont you have pet stores where you live? Eco earth brick coir is sold at almost any chain pet store dude , hard to find in garden stores.

I would really advise again peat based substrate, save it for casing mix!

do not do that:thumbup: for pasty plates pc them..let them cool, for bulk sub just use coir or dead grass or manure or something with nutes and micro organisms:cool:
