Spawning/casing spent cakes in uncolonized substrate success!
    #21322284 - 02/24/15 11:19 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Ok so here's the deal. I had six cakes that had flushed twice(total of a little over an ounce and a half dry total) 3 were B+ and the other 3 were golden teachers.

I needed to move them somewhere else cause I had five treasure coasts ready to be birthed that were showing signs of being extremely healthy cakes as most of mine tend to be. Not bragging, I still lack in spawning skills but my cakes are awesome.

So I lazily decided to spawn them into a fifty fifty mix of vermiculite and organic potting soil(peat moss, perlite,etc.) But here's the twist. I had read accounts of people here not sterilizing or pasteurizing substrates when spawning with success.

So I left them all as cakes and spawned as you normally would when opting not to break them up. I did this for a few reasons. Breaking them up would make them more susceptible to contamination for one. And as cakes they would fruit sooner. And seeing how this was just a lazy project I would be happy beating the inevitable contams by one healthy flush.

To my supprise when I woke up today the five cakes I have in the sgfc haven't started their first flush but I'm starting to see several pins popping through the casing layer in my unpasteurized experiment. They are looking very very healthy and on track to be substantially bigger than the fruits my cakes produce.

The thinking behind all this was. If I've had success throwing cakes in a shallow hole in the garden and covering up, then I should be able to do the same inside by keeping the healthy microorganisms in the substrate. I would never ever try this without healthy spawn at least but from what I'm seeing I wouldn't be surprised at this point if I were to get another two flushes. Some people who've also done similar experiments swear by it and do it every time this way now.

I'll post pictures in a few days, sorry for the way this was all put together I'm typing on my phone. Anyone else had similar success with unsterilized/unpasteurized substrates?

Right which is very possible, but that would still accomplish my goal. And also gives me an option if this were to ever happen again. But I'm ready to start doing some bulk grows with monotubs anyways. I've got everything I need except some good manure but almost every other one of my neighbors has a horse or two on their property so I'll probably go buy some from them soon. Or offer to clean some off their pastures. d ;
