Slip up on my first run with my pressure cooker.
    #21319343 - 02/23/15 06:59 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

So I soaked my WBS for 18 hours, then simmered them for about 30 minutes today. Allowed them to dry for acouple hours. Stirring them up occasionally. Loaded my jars and PC'd them in my new pressure cooker I got today.

This is where I messed up. I only PC'd them for 45 minutes at 15 psi.
Should that be good enough?
If not, can I PC them for another 30 minutes, or should I restart the the PC cycle?

No that will not cut it. I would PC them again for a full 90 min.

You can cut your soak/simmer time down too.

All of the teks I've read, have either said 60 minutes, or 60-90 minutes.

I'm sure the full 90 would be ideal, but shouldn't the 60 minutes be sufficent?

The only reason I soaked so long was because I start the soak early eveing and didn't want to mess with it late that night. And I realized I simmered to long as well. Have afew popped grains in there /:

60 min is a little bit of old info. It can work. But 90 is better. Its up to you. Think about it like this, do you want a grow you spent six weeks on not going well cause you skimped on 30 min?

Yeah, I totally get ya.
I have them in the PC as we speak. I'm going to let them go as long as I can before I have to go to bed. Gotta be up by 3:45 tomorrow morning for work /:
Was really wanting to be able to knock this jars up when I get home from work tomorrow.

well said pasty!

If all the teks you read says 60-90mins you should fill in the "no older than" box in the search engine! 3-4 yrs or so should be fine!

It's more like 90-120...90 for small batches or if you're short on time, the full 120 for anything like 5+

I won't even tell people how I run my grain cause it goes against the old wisdom. But with heat sterilization longer is always safer within reason of course. Not sure I would advocate a 10 hour cycle, ya might end up with sterilized porridge

Everybody has their ways that work for them. Nothing wrong with doing something different if it still does the job.

And I don't think I could handle hearing my PC run for 10'hours myself haha

I do 60 on WBS but I'll have to try 90 on rye berry's sadly enough I had about 4 quarts of green mold. Although it could've been that I used tyvek from the post office as a filter material. Lmao NEVER going to use that crap again, I'll stick to polyfill lids and micropore the quart with polyfill remained contam free

I run for two hour minimum. That's one area I don't skimp. Lol...generally let them go 2 1/2 hours . I used to go 60-90 and was having problems with bacteria.... switched to 120-150 minutes minimum and haven't had that problem in a while. Changed a few things so I'm not sure if that's where the problem was solely originating. But I figure it can't hurt.

Soooo, two slip ups in a row yesterday. When I PC'd the second time last night, I went the full 90 minutes. But the last 15 minutes I couldn't get past 14 PSI. I was holding steady at 14 PSI though.

When I checked the pressure cooker this morning before I left were work, I noticed it was almost dry. I checked the water level before goon into the second cycle and it looked like there was plenty of water, but I guess I was wrong. So I believe that is the reason the pressure wouldn't go past 14 PSI for the last 15 minutes.

Ya live and ya learn.

But here are my jars..
