Off color in Grains
    #21318378 - 02/23/15 03:22 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

This off color is concerning. I just shook these jars, does it look like anything that would make me want to throw the spawn out? I circled one of the grains to show exactly what off color I mean

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road
and saw a Cheshsire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'"

Looks like the inside of a colonized grain after a shake.

It looks fine.

That's the color of gelatinized starch in oats after the hull is removed.  It's exactly what you want the inside of your grains to look like.  Compare to the ones in the oat prep link in my sig.

If your oats turn reddish after colonization, that's normal.

All I see is a little bruising from the shake, your good to go.

If your talking about the grains themselves, they look fine too.  Some grains will just have a different hue than others naturally.

Hey VDG,

Why does this happen? I always assumed the myc was sucking out nutrients from the inside, changing the color a bit. For instance I can always tell G2Ged grains in my jars. It's actually really nice for even distributions sake.

No clue!  It might be that or one of a dozen different things.
