Hello i went to the wood store and i can only get this old.... aged oak wood table.

I can also get this oak wood table (this is a new table), also 4 times for expensive.

But for our proposes is even better the aged wood? right? So i don't even bother with the new one?

And they machine that shreds the wood tables will process it like this, some kind of cylindrical thin stuff.

That's the only stuff i can get where i live.

Is not sawdust is that cylindrical stuff. What i really want to know if they aged wood is better than the new one? because the aged one is super cheap compared to the new wood table.

A sack of that cyclindrical stuff with the aged oak wood = 20$

A sack of that cyclindrical stuff with the new oak wood = 80$

But i'm sure the aged wood is even better for our purposes? Its what i want to know.

it is treated at all? was it kiln dried? only way to know for sure is to test it out. as long as it hasn't been pressure treated to resist weather. that process uses heavy metals. no bueno

I remember reading in a Stamets book that aged sawdust has more water holding capacity. Not sure about shavings, but it seems like they would too.

It also recommended to avoid shavings, as they're to airy and mycelium has a harder time colonizing a fluffier sub. compared to compacted sawdust...

They are just old wood tables that has been outdoors long time with the Sun and the rains.. etc.

Just go to a hardwood mill there has to be some close to you. I have a rough cut mill about 7 miles away and they give the stuff away most of it goes for stable bedding but show up with 5 5/galon pails and they will let you take as much as you want. Cabinate makers too they will be glad to give the waste to you.
