2nd attempt a few quick questions
    #21311451 - 02/22/15 12:21 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I'm attempting my second BRF PF tek grow... first I'll give some back story with the first grow.

I followed the "Lets grow Mushrooms" videos to the "T".  The first batch of cakes took incredibly long to colonize approx. 2.5 months. I was worried but touted it up to the jars i had used ( Ker 1/2pt.  jelly jars). once i had full colonization i performed the DnR and popped them into the SGFC. This is when i started having issues keeping humidity up, i tried everything, but after 5 weeks of misting and fanning (with no pins) and trying everything i could to bring the humidity up i started to notice some yellow growths on the cakes, as well as them getting a greenish hue to them, it was quite apparent. Since i couldn't find any info on this type of symptom i figured i would cut my losses and i got rid of the cakes, i took them outside and once in the trash, i decided to crumble them to check the water content, incase their long colonization time had been the issue the whole time, but it wasn't, they were still very moist.

Heres where im at.

With my second batch, I found the correct 1/2pt wide mouth jars that you see in the video. This batch took off immediately after inoculation it took only 1.5 weeks to reach 75% colonization, I was ecstatic! So as directed I waited until full colonization and the additional week and birthed them (as of wednesday 18feb). Once again as suggested i dunked for 24 hours and rolled in sterilized verm.

So now to my questions, i'm still having humidity issues. I'm consistently getting 80% RH, a lot of the suggestions recommend higher  90%-100%RH. i'm unsure as to how I can reach this level without using a humidifier of some sort. Humidifying my house is out of the option. The room is at a constant 76°f.  ** All 6 sides have holes spaced 2in. apart with 4in. of perlite**

Heres a picture of my SGFC setup.

I just wanna get this issue taken care of and hear some good suggestions. i have a Zoo Med Reptile Fogger, but i am hesitant to use it due to its ability to bring down the temperature.

Thank you all for your time and help.

I think it needs to be raised off the surface and have holes in the bottom as well

its raised off the ground about 1.5ins and has holes on the bottom as well, also spaced 2ins. apart. Thats a heating pad its sitting on with a tube underneath it to keep the air holes open on the bottom of the FC

You want 6 inches of clearance on all 6 sides including the bottom. Get the heating pad outta there. From what I've read you want to heat the room, not the chamber. Do you have holes in the top as well?

So, ive noticed a slight increase to humidity. its staying around 79-82%RH and will climb to 93%RH after misting and fanning.

Could it be that i have to many holes in my SGFC? i did the suggested 2in x 2in grid pattern. The average humidity of my house is from 67-72% RH. im not sure how i can get the humidity in the FC up to the recommended 90-100%..... im still stumped.

any thoughts?

nah fuck that, just mist your cakes until they glisten and they'll have perfect moisture where it matters!

Are you sure your hygrometer is accurate? I'm on my first grow and was having the exact problem you are and it really made no sense. Two different hygrometers with two different results.
I borrowed a calibrated higher quality hygrometer from a friend and it turned out my humidity was fine.
I heard some people here wrap it in a wet rag to test it. You might want to try that too to make sure you're not chasing your tail.

Build your SGFC to spec and the humidity will take care of itself. Hygrometers are

I've heard most of the average, lower end hygrometers aren't accurate.

Another things is, you want the humidity to fluctuate somewhat and not be constant. The mushrooms need that to grow.

ok,  as far as i know the SGFC is built to specs 1/4in holes spaced 2in by 2 in apart, now its raised 6in off the ground and away from walls. i guess ill just wait and see what happens.
