Condensation in Petri Dish Sleeve after pouring agar
    #21315880 - 02/23/15 02:02 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I know there is way to avoid condensation on the lids of dishes (I placed two half pint mason jars with hot water on top of the stack of dishes after pouring dishes) but I just checked the two sleeves I poured and it looks like theres condensation in the petri sleeves. Does this happen often or did I mess this up somehow,.. Thanks for any help - this is my first agar work ever.

EDIT: Clarification: 2 sleeves of 10, poured as soon as I could handle the flask with hot agar, poured them then placed them back into the sleeves to cool then added 2 jars with hot water on top of each stack - now noticing condensation in the actual sleeves.

To avoid condensation leave them at room temperature for a few hours. If you put them in the fridge instantly they'll get bigger drops of water. To clear this water wait for your SAB to be steady, collect all the water on one side by leaning the petri around (Closed) and open the petri upside down and let the water drop off.

The reason why you have condensation in the sleeve is because the hot mason jar would have steadied the temperature of the top petri but none of the others, they're still giving off a lot of heat as they cool down which would cause a temperature difference which causes condensation.

To avoid just don't put it in your sleeve ASAP. Wait a few hours if you can for the heat to dissipate. I routinely leave Pasty Plates and tri-petris out for 24-48 hours before storing them.

What do you do to dishes that didn't have condensation and already have mycelium growth. Then the temp drops due to a cold front and you then get condensation on your plates. It's been a while and the condensation still hasn't left.

Just gotta wait that one out.

Condensation doesn't directly cause contaminations so I really don't worry about it. If you stack them while they colonize typically only the top will get condensation.

I wrap my plates and put them in a cabinet as soon as they solidify and leave them there for a few days. For some reason there's never any condensation in them after 3-4 days. I discovered this by accident.

Same rule applies as leaving it I the SAB. Heat eventually disperses no matter what the container is. Condensation occurs when the inside of the plate is hotter them the outside so the steam rapidly changes temperature and solidifies into a liquid.

If you let the temperatures equal out, no condensation.

Yeah I definitely put the sleeves back on right after pouring - since this is my first time using agar, and I only have an SAB I was extremely paranoid about it all. Thanks for all the help!
