I hate Joe Rogan so much, like I literally hate everything about him, especially the way he blabbers and talks. He's a stupid fuckface. I couldn't watch more than 3 seconds of that video without wanting to slap his dumb fat face.

I don't think the mind is all that complicated. It builds mental models of real world things (like yourself as your ego). It uses these mental models along with lists of beliefs and things that it labels as mattering to try to predict how things play out and make appropriate decision. It's a biological computer, albeit a fairly powerful and flexible one.
All the processes can be witnessed by anyone who shifts their attention to inward from time to time. Even this shifting mechanism seems to be governed by mental processes. You learn that you can watch your attention to your thoughts. You realize it can be valuable sometimes. So that option gets recorded as a possibility and gets factored into decisions. Decisions which still just compare a model of self, your values and desires, versus models of life situations. You make the choice that seem to take you down a path that is most in alignment with who you think you are and what you think you want. Being able to watch that process occur and study the results of decisions can help you fine tune your self and life models. Did it go as I expected and leave me feeling more satisfied? Or was there some misconception in my understanding of the situation, or my understanding of who I am and what would actually make me happy?
But still, in the end, watched or unwatched, the mind just ends up running predictive calculations hopefully refining it's internal models based upon real life results. Of course some people rigidly cling to comfortable or heavily invested beliefs and don't allow them to be refined by information and life experience. The prefer the comfort of believing that their mental models of self and life are already prefect over the scary instability of not, and maybe never completely understanding things. Before you can learn, you have to admit that you don't already know.
So yea, the mind really does work much like an elaborate computer that was built by evolutionary forces and programmed by life experiences, information intake, and social conditioning.
To me the only real mystery of the mind isn't how it works. It's the question of what exactly is looking out at life through it. Conscious awareness can be shift from experiencing sensory information to witnessing internal mental processes and that's all fine and dandy. The question is, what the fuck is actually watching and experiencing this.
Computers can do a lot of amazing things. Maybe one can be built can to process information much like a human being, but how in the hell would a computer end up with something watching it from with? The watcher is the mystery.

Yeah that's something that I'm always thinking about, like if a clone of me were made and all my memories were somehow uploaded to it, it would appear to be me from everyone else, and yet 'my consciousness' would not be in control of the clones actions. It would be another agent.
Then what happens if I want to upload myself to a computer...would 'my consciousness' or whatever it is go with it or would the memories just copy and make another agency in the machine? Leaving me in the body....
