I bought Tyvek paper. I cannot blow through it, so I assume it wont be good as filter. By the way they also had tyvek cloth, and I could not blow through it either. What is wrong?

blowing is not a good test of filtration in this hobby, you can blow through a coffee filter also but noone would use it to keep spores out.

My wife does the same test to me less often that I'd like But that's life works every time LOLOLOL.
But no seriously, I roll up poly felt into my jar lids as a air exchange. I stuff it though the holes and looks like snails. I blow through them to test that there is enough air resistance. The proper amount of resistance signifies (TO ME) that the size of the holes are restricted enough to stop the bullshit from getting in during myc dinner time. Works like a charm especially like the face I got this felt stuff for free from a trash can dumpster diving one day.

I thought if I cannot blow through it, then gas cannot pass, and there will be no gas exchange. so even if I cannot blow through it, gas can pass?

This is a poor test. Tyvek works, it's proven. Make some jars with it you'll be fine.

I am a carpenter and tyvek is used as a vapor barrier, before installing siding.
It keeps water out. While allowing your home and the materials it is built with some Ge.

I am not 100% sure on this... but I believe that some of the PO tyvek has changed. Seems they are using some type of plastic or polymer in it now. At least some of the envelopes I recently picked up are different than they were previously.
If you want to use tyvek I'd just get one of those tyvek suits that people wear to paint in or do a dirty job.... will give you enough tyvek for years...
Personally, I prefer polyfill over tyvek, but that's more of a personal preference type thing.

Yea I don't know about the p.o. now??? I did grab a stack of tyvek ones from there last year though! And honestly the construction tyvek usually has some pretty decent sized holes in it.

kite tyvek works better than post office tyvek according to RR. but most people use post office tyvek. you can grab an envelope for free. tyvek is just plastic produced in a unique architecture which makes it act as a gas permeable membrane.

post offices still carry tyvek envelopes. for me they are near the kiosk/self-serve area where the machine to buy stamps is located.

Just like bodhisatta said, tyvek is simply an architecture. It is made from high density polyethylene (HDPE for short). It's a really simple monomer that looks like this: Code:
H H - C - C - H H
That's the beauty of some polymers. Take a small structure, and just link it together with many like it! Science at work!

In Europe it isn't standard with Tyvek envelopes :/
