Bigger bulk tray = Bigger & more shrooms
    #21311645 - 02/22/15 02:33 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all.

I have come to an conclusion that the bigger your bulk in one tray is, the more and bigger shrooms you get.

With 15 liters of bulk + 3,75 liters of spawn in one tray that is 18cm in height, 50cm in lenght and 33cm in width produced overwhelmingly more and bigger shrooms than the current tray that i use now.

The tray i use now has 5 liters of bulk + 1,15 liters of spawn and it is 14cm in height, 30cm in lenght and 22cm in width.
I have 3 of these trays and if i weigh the amount of shrooms in grams from all the 3 trays its about 100g less than if i had one big tray.

What do you guys think about this?

Should i make bigger trays only?

Haha =D

I only meant that is it worth making bigger trays because it takes much more work and the contamination risk rises.

do what works for you.
i think i get higher yields from more surface area for fruiting.  others may think they get higher yields from less surface area, but deeper substrate.
maybe u were under hydrating ur substrate before, and the deeper tray allowed for more water holding capacity, so it gave the illusion of better yield.
not saying thats what happened, but there are many variables that come into play with yield.
good luck brother

Concerning the matter of substrate depth, "ideal" is up to the individual cultivator.  Standard-average cubesis substrate depth is 3-4 inches.  Anything over 4 inches encourages anaerobic environments towards the center of the substrate.  Thicker than 4 inch substrates can be utilized, but the utilization of substrates that are thicker than 4 inches is a little bit more of an advanced skill set.  I use 1-2 inches as my standard average substrate depth.

Sometimes you want to grow out a bulk grow of something, sometimes you want to grow less mushrooms for a specific reason like growing out a good shroom to clone, trying a new variety from a new spore print or a different species etc. I often grow small scale projects that are all different species and genetics so in that case a bigger tub/tray isn't better. If all I wanted was big shrooms and massive harvests I would isolate a good strain of cubensis and grow it out in 66qt mono tubs.
