Why is there so much focus on ourselves?

The things that deserve our attention aren't within ourselves it's out in the world, the globe is warming, animal numbers are dwindling, ecosystems are breaking down, were over populating the earth and the news isn't telling us what we should be hearing. Everything's about money and theres a staggering amount of greed and desensitization happening all around us, why is there so much focus on ones self rather than putting that focus on bettering the world so that it can continue?
It's easy to be selfish, weak willed, and depressed by the world but we all need to make a change right now in our way of thinking, it's not about us, it's about them, humans got us this far, let's not wipe out right when things were getting good.
Here's some things to focus on:
Life as a new born, try to focus on the thoughts you had then, your mind was pure and hope for life at its most. It's still there you just have to remember.
Watch more nature documentaries, less TV, less radio, less things to own, less waste, and eat food that is sustainably grown and with the animals living conditions in mind.
Remember you support with your dollar, so buy with quality in mind and limit your quantity.
Exercise, physical activity is vital to health.
Something else to consider is, you (we) don't deserve life, you're (we're) lucky to have it, make it count towards our history.

All the sages of old agree that enlightenment is found within ourselves and not without. The most beneficial change one can make is with oneself. Battling the evils of the world begins firstly with changing our own way of thinking.

So your saying people gotta wade through all the obstacles before that can see the light? I agree but the society puts so many of those obstacles in our way, maybe to develop discipline but seemingly mostly to make a profit, which fuels a economy which fuels innovation (is that worth it?), theres gotta be a better way though, better education for kids and mushrooms for teens rather than alcohol?
I feel on the surface society is nihilistic or better maybe, secular. But deep down I get a sense of a possibility that it's all for the greater good, but is it?

our world is messed up all you can you is change yourself and lead by example. All most no one can do that. The only way to make this world like that is to stop using fossil fuels completely, meaning revert back to living purely off the land. thats the only way i see. and being how the world works it wont happen until we have exhausted all fossil fuels then everything will come crumbling down and a select few will be strong enough to survive.

The greater good of the elite, perhaps. It surely isn't for the greater good of the general population, particularly the middle class.
In case some of you haven't noticed, particularly those with heads down texting as you walk outside, we are under attack.
We ARE UNDER ATTACK! When the air you breathe is being poisoned by planes dumping coal dust on you daily, and you see it but you just don't really see it, or you are so used to breathing shitty air, it doesn't register anymore. Perhaps you are convinced this is all for the "greater good" once you believe the lie that it was done to try to cool the planet, but hey it didn't work. We would have told you earlier, but oh fucking well.
Well I'm telling you now, pull your head out of the PBS Nature Documentaries such as "Dimming the Planet" because you've been brainwashed there, as well. You believe something sponsored by Koch Brothers and ExxonMobil to truly be for your "greater good"?
Ostriches, today is the day, pull your fucking heads out of the sand, and start looking around.
I hope this helps you OP, but you are likely young, idealistic, and think your help will help things. The only real help you can give others is to let them know we are under fucking attack, and it's getting worse.

Thanks for the sermon but this is actually supposed to be a discussion and debate forum.

Allot of assumptions in that post? Icelander is correct it feels more like a sermon or venting of emotions.

It's one of the first stages of spiritual awakening. The basic gist is good, but until one examines the underbelly of human nature and the forces at work it will be all idealism and what in my opinion is at best a 'selfish' sacrifice.
I live for myself as a hedonist but am careful not to tread on the liberty of others. I don't care about the "world" because the world is corrupt and isn't going to change. I was once more optimistic but feel my current outlook is more balanced.
I have no memory of being a new born. I like fiction TV and generally watch 2 hours a day. My favorites ATM are Vikings, Elementary and Gotham. I rarely watch nature documentaries (though I have watched quite a few in the past), though I have two cats and like to play with one of them. I exercise every other day and eat well. Unprocessed meat is delicious.

Enjoyed the last Vikings series. New one should be coming out soon yey.
What is good? Is it self serving valued on survival? If it's survival and our organisms extended influence then there will be contradictions as nature decides it.
