Religion as memes
    #2130794 - 11/23/03 06:54 PM (14 years, 25 days ago)

I like the concept of memes. Viewing ideas and thoughts as replicators which propagate and evolve much like living beings (or genes which are their replicators), is really eye opening. As memes or ideas go, the most powerful and long lived ones are the religious. Religion is nothing more than resilient mind-viruses that are more infectious and faster propagating than rational thought.

Here's a nice template for creating a religious meme:

Take half a gram of phanerothyme."

i would say that the most powerful, longlasting, and unfortunately, destructive meme of all is materialism. it is because of materialism that we are ripping this planet apart. if we cannot give up this age old meme we will not be able to survive.

Yeah, but are you sure that is something which we learn? It seems pretty basic in nature that it's a good thing to have more of the things that make you secure (like food, or SUVs).

Hehe, nice. From your link:

If you identify yourself with the idea you are discussing, then you set yourself up to be destroyed when the dominant meme presents itself.

When we understand that we are NOT our ideas, then we learn to benefit and win when a dominant or ?king? idea presents itself.
