silverstem said: Looks like u cut it out in the firs pic there is sub under the bottom mushie in the new pic there is no sub.. But I could be wrong like I said b4 if its true props to u i don't wanna start anything but I wouldn't call this a tek it needs more research and expirements... Rye barries would contaminate when u mix your spawn in that's why we don't use it in bulk grows unless its 100% colonized and used as spawn.
Point conceded, let's not call it a "tech", it is an "experiment". The only thing I want to "start" is mushrooms, I can understand that people would be skeptical, what I am doing is new.
I was reluctant to post this in the first place, but in the interest of sharing and expanding ideas, I thought it might create some interest and lively discussion.
I really don't want to spend too much time reacting to negative comments unless they are of a constructive nature, I got caught up in this in another post and I am not going to take the bait.
I will update this post as the grow continues and will give it another go when I start my next batch of rye berries to see if the experiment is repeatable.
Perhaps I got lucky with contams, I, however, do my work under a flow hood and follow strict sanitary procedures. It is my understanding that when you get to the fruiting stage sanitary precautions are done with; as the trays /cakes etc are now exposed to open air?
Ps. Please expand on this comment, "Rye barries (sic) would contaminate when u mix your spawn in that's why we don't use it in bulk grows unless its 100% colonized and used as spawn". I'm not getting your point?

If you open air spawned those trays and the sub was sterile then i guess there has to be some contams in there even if the cubes won. I am not surprised, a fully colonized quart jar spawned to that little Chinese food container would be and outrages amount of spawn to sub ratio at least 50/50 > right? i thnk i would leave out the brown sugar, honey ,a nd agar.. they just seem like a great place for bacteria to hang out.

I sanitized the trays by dunking them in boiling water. The substrate was brought to a boil twice, although I could have pressure cooked the mixture.
I agree, it was an outrageous amount of spawn 50/50 to substrate. The spawn was introduced to the substrate under a hood, the casing added and then the lids sealed.
Next time I will pour the trays, then pc them with lids on, add an sfd to the top. Perhaps pasteurize the casing before adding. The trays are microwavable, so they should hold up in the pc. These steps should help with contams.
I think the agar is important as it gels the mix, honey is antibacterial as well.
