fertilizer bad in premade casing mix?
    #2130623 - 11/23/03 04:53 PM (14 years, 23 days ago)

so walmart doesn't have jiffy mix any more,
but they have this other stuff that is similar
with the addition of "fertilizer"
i can't remember if jiffy mix had that in there or not.
would the ferilizer harm the casing?
throw the ph off and chemically burn my mushies?,
or would this work for me?

I would be weary about any product that mentions fertilizer. That seems to indicate some form of nutrition and that's not what you want in a casing as it would invite contams.

However, if you decide to go with it, at Petco in the fish department they have ph test kits and it seems likely that you could apply them for testing casing ph, if it's too acidic head over to the reptile department and get a product called Vita-sand which is like 99% pure calcium carbonate which is an acidic buffer.

I would also nuke the hell out of it as this will leech some nutrients out of the stuff (just like cooked vegetables are less nutritious). You're better off looking for casing alternatives though, like in the garden shop at walmart look for vermiculite, or some form of manure, or back at petco pick up some Forest Bed coco coir for you casing. Good luck,
