Pressure cooker help?
    #21302996 - 02/20/15 09:35 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys so I found an old pressure cooker. It doesn't have a rocker. When I have the heat all the way up the rubber stopper pressure thing goes all the way up. How do I know that it is even worker. Is a rocker needed for this type? What could I use to substitute a rocker?

Take a pic. The rocker is normally the weight that allows you to get to 15 psi.

rockers are a specific weight to rock when the certain psi is hit. i would say it would be easier to get another pc'er then try and find an alternative rocker. post a pic so we know what ya got.

Okay since my camera isn't working right now I found a pic of what it looks like online. It doesn't have a rocker like this one.

Otherwise it's just spitting out the steam you want to capture.

Buy a rocker.

im not sure what you could use for a rocker. do some research and see what 15psi rockers weight and etc.. to see if you can construct one. its gonna have to be able to stand up to extreme temps and saturation.

What would you call the rubber stopper thing on the lid? When it's on high heat the rubber thing raises and some steam comes out of the handle? Would that indicate enough pressure?

No it doesn't Ach,

That just indicates that pressure is being built but the actual rocker stops the pressure from being released.

that things lets all the existing air in the chamber out so that there is no air in the cooker. once all the air is out and the pressure starts to rise the stopper pops up and the cooker begins to build pressure

If you want to use a shotglass that's fine but you'll have to tape it in a way that SOME steam releases but not all. Also what he said above me, you'll need an actual 15 psi weight to calculate this.

Do you have a digital scale? I have a 15 psi weight and a scale so I can weigh mine out for you and give you what weight you're looking for.

Hmm...
Have you seen this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/5245/Correct-pressure-cooker-use

Steam that HAS to escape? Yeah a little or it'll just keep building.

If I was to use a shotglass I'd put the shot glass over it and put some tape around the hole but leave a crack open. You're gonna need water proof tape, or maybe silicone it down. Leave one side open so steam can be released. This won't rock and may be dangerous though, you'll have to do A LOT of testing.

You can also buy a rocker for 8 bucks:

I'm just gonna buy one :L Well crap. I tried to make one and the tape I used melted. I used coins to up the weight to 87 grams exactly, plastic melted away.
