anyone have any experience with growing golden teachers in rye substrate?
    #21300271 - 02/19/15 06:10 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

im fixing on growing some golden teachers because theyre the cheapest spores on the website im ordering off of. it says they grow on equine dung but i dont want to eat something that grew on a piece of shit so imma use a rye substrate. the spores will still inoculate and the mycelium will grow, no doubt, right? thanks - j

you use rye as spawn, shit is the substrate. cow and horse manure isn't shit, they don't fully digest grass. it's more like composted grass.
you can grow on straight rye but it won't get you much.

You can also grow golden teachers with PFTek. It works quite well.

Your rye once colonized will be broken up and spawned to a bulk tub with coir and verm. I will point ya in the right direction. Get to reading: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/favlinker.php?Cat=&Entry=121140&F_Board=2&Thread=14507008&partnumber=1&postmarker=

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php

Start there.

Rye is good, but because it is a grain you will need a substrate. Coir, is cocnut husks, it is semi nutrious and holds a shit ton of moisture. It is also fully colonizable. People like to spawn one brick of pasteurized coir to 5-6 jars of colonized rye to a mono tub.

Search the key terms in my statement about.

IE: Monotub; Coir; Susbtrate;

im currently trying to grow GT on wheat berries (basically the same thing as rye/rye-berries).

you soak rye for 24hrs, fill jars with it, sterelize them in a pressure cooker, inoculate with spores, and wait.

after about 8-12 days, shake
after another 8-12 days it should be fully colonsied.
at this point you mix it with pasteurated coco coir (easy to buy at garden/pet store) and put it in a monotub or other fruiting chamber, where it takes a few weeks until you can pick anything off

the coir is only pateurized (ie: boil some water, pour on coir, cover and let it sit for a while around 80 celcius)

the grain needs to be sterilised fully though - no mold, no bacteria, etc that could survive the temperatures of boiling water. Using a pressure coker means heating them to higher temperatures under pressure, fully sterilizing them. The pressure cooker is one of the most expensive and critical items

nope.

you sterilize rye in jars or bags. 90-120m at 15psi in a pressure cooker or 8 hours without pressure in a steam bath like you do with PF cakes.

basically if you use whole grains like rye you need a pressure cooker

Your best bet is to do some research and learn to use the search function (UTSF). Once you've decided on a strategy for growing - most people won't do grains until they've started doing agar work (look it up) - follow the technique you've decided on to the letter. The info is all out there and people like bodhisatta, cronicr, van der griegen, pussyfart and many others have great links in their signatures with all the info you need already laid out.

Get reading

Here's an example of using the search function ('Search Our Forums' link in the top right corner) to find results related to your query that you can trust:

For over a year i think i've been reading that acronym as 'UTFS' (use the fucking search) - whoops :crazy2:

but i agree - theres a lot of info on this site, A LOT of info. easily enough info to find out that golden teacher can grow on grain spawn, and how to make grain spawn. Theres a dozen valid teks for it, and they are all extremely similar (different soak/simmer/PC times, but the end result is sterilized jars of rye/wheat grain)

Lots of people probably DO use the acronym for "Use The Fucking Search" It is a common sentiment.

Also lots of teks for cased straight grains if you just want to fruit from the grain without using a bulk substrate like hpoo, coir or straw.

huh - i didn't know that. I mean, i cant see why not, since thats how you do PF tek, but is there any reason to?

my understanding is a bulk substrate (i plan to use coir when my current jars are ready) provides additional nutrients, plenty of moisture, and a big flat surface to fruit from. Even doing a little 5-10qt coir minimono would likely be way better results than making a 5-10qt perelite shotgun chamber

Yeah there's plenty of reasons to case straight grain. taGyo just posted some pics of a contaminated spawn jar he suspected would contam so he just cased it and got a nice flush out of it without risking a larger project. Often when you harvest sclerotia (truffles, philosophers stones, etc.) you will case the straight grains to get fruits afterwards so you can get spore prints. P mexicana, P galindoi and P tampenensis are all great for this.

I just cased some dunked wheat berries that were colonized by a galindoi MS. I use the fruits for my headaches and my supply is low so instead of doing a bulk project I just cased the grains and will fruit them right away after they recover.

There are also whole ways of growing like Vtek where you grow entirely in pp5 plastic containers with whole grain brown rice without ever spawning to bulk. Just case and fruit

It's all preference but fruiting from grain is badass. I've even just tossed the grain cake in the FC to get some quick fruits though it inevitably dried out and contams so you won't get lots of shrooms from that method.

These are all grows on straight wheat berries - some cased, some uncased, some cased in jiffy mix and some in vermiculite.

It has some advantages, and some people would argue disadvantages. Like any technique. People need to pick what works for them.

Violet for one I think would disagree with you about the 'way better results' comment. You can do awesome grows with any tek, and also piss poor grows.

This is from Violet's thread:

EDIT: for clarity all the above grows are straight cased grain - whole brown rice to be precise but could be wheat or rye or WBS or oats etc etc.
