q about agar growth.
    #21299360 - 02/19/15 02:33 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

OK so I nocd a couple combo plates the other day ( thanks cron!) The spores germed well and within a few days I took my first transfers which are coming along great....so I took a look at the first plates today (spored plates) and when I held it up to the light I could see what appeared to be rhizo growth coming from the point of innoc ( a cluster I hadn't transfered from) the container (pp5) had dimpled so the agar layer is paper thin in that spot...all of the other growth is tomentos.the spot is only the size of half a penny or so.

My question is how rare would it be to see rhizo growth right out of the gate (taking into account the thinning of the PDA) and what If any contams mimic rhizo myc.on agar....I realize that some molds appear that way on subs but I'm just really getting into agar....I used the engine but 1900990 or so post come up...soooo. Any help or a point in the right direction would really be appreciated.

It's not rare at all. I see rhizo and tomentose every day.

I know of no contams that look like real rhizo myc.

A pic would help. Just sounds like you got growth though, which is good

That's what I was thinking. But I have seen what I think was  mold show up as spikes of rhizo looking strings going aerial on bulk subs before. I don't know what they would look like on agar though....that particular case was a bacteria infected spawn (wbs) I knew it had some bacteria and spawned it anyways. It was getting these spike looking rhizos that stuck like an inch up out of the coir.. It greened out as it was pinning. And i think the strings i was seeing were the mold I think the bacteria weakened the myc enough to let the mold gain a foothold.

I don't know of any mold that looks like spiky mycelium. I know if it's too humid or there's not enough air in an environment (which kind of go hand-in-hand) you can get aerial or spiky mycelium.

Bacteria is normally blobby.

Do you have pics?

Yeah I could take a pic in a bit ( playing with my daughter lol) but it just looks like regular old rhizo growth. I'm pretty familiar with myc. I've just never had it go rhizo so quick. I'm thinking it because the agar is so thin. Just got me thinking about lookalike contams
..or if there was any.

You're probably good then,

Don't worry about the pics if you're sure.

Yeah it definitely looks like regular myc. Just tripped me out how quick it rhizo'd got me thinking about if there were any contams that looked the same as rhizo....I wouldn't have thought anything of it but the plate had a few wedges out of it so it could have got a contam. Thanks for the reply:-)
