Do Cubies Grow on Cardboard????
    #2129710 - 11/22/03 11:28 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

Okay I've been wondering this for awhile. Is it possible to cultivate mycelium on cardboard? and then use this to innoculate cow poo?

cubensis does not grow on cardboard. it is a grain loving strain, however other species do grow on cardboard.

well has anyone ever seen peat moss with twigs and that mycelium seems to colonize the twig?? I 'm not asking if I can fruit on cardboard just expand mycelium on it. I guess I'm gonna have to try this on my own. Thinking about it if I were to lay grain spawn is the mycelium merely growing out on it relying on the nutrition provided by the grain or would it start digesting the cardboard? And twistedjay I don't know how much of a newbie you think I am but thanks for replying. Cubensis is actually a dung loving species not necessarily grain loving. Grain is merely a medium used for spawn generation. If I'm not wrong you have either two types of saprophytic mushrooms those that grow on wood and those that grow on dung.

I've heard of cubensis being spawned onto cardboard for fruiting. I dont think mycelium can really germinate on it.

I've seen a cake placed on wet cardboard, afterwards the cardboard colonized and pinned.. So in a sense yes cubes can technicaly colonize it and sucessfuly fruit on it, but with small fruits..

From what I understand, cardboard is actually highly selective. Meaning it's very resistant to contams, but allows certain myceliums like Ps Azurenscens to colonize it. In the case of cubies, keep grain/cakes as the substrate, but how about using cardboard as a casing layer, or a casing layer additive? Try to take advantage of it's contam resistance.

It can and does. I have used cardboard to germinate spores many times before transfering to peroxided agar. It works well and is highly selective. I have never had a contaminate grow on it. I sometimes use this method to clean up dirty spore prints.

I was waiting for those pictures. Cubies do grow on cardboard, probably dont fruit by itself, since he spawned it to an outdoor bed.
Nice job, mescalato
