Food Dehydrators
    #21293374 - 02/18/15 12:26 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hey my peoples, I'm interested in buying a food Dehydrator to dry my mushrooms but the cheapest ones I see all have a preset temperature that might damage the mushrooms. My question for you is do you know what would be a proper food Dehydrator for about $30-$40?

i use the preset temp and just drill holes in the side. keeping the mushies as far away from the center as possible. works well with the nesco 37a with no potency loss.$30 on amazon.

I am without a drill at the moment and I would rather keep it intact. As I research more and more they all have an average of 160°F default temp I've seen some that have a adjustable temp but haven't been able to find the right model that does it

They won't damage the mushrooms.
Potency loss from heat is a myth (unless you are actually lighting them on fire).
A cheap dehydrator is fine.
Just set it and forget it!

It won't hurt them. The most important thing is the moving air. That's why we don't put them in the oven.

Except for when we put them in the oven with the door cracked open.

The heat will not damage them. That is old info.

This one works for me!

What would be an appropriate temperature for a mini conventional oven that's used for baking pizzas and things of that nature. I think I might just be able to use that instead of blowing a few bucks so soon but I'll probably just end up getting it in the near future regardless

When people oven-dry mushrooms (as I have when I've had tubs colonize faster than expected due to a warm spring), the best temperature is the WARM or whatever the lowest temp setting is.  As dnllln says, it's mostly the moving air that does the trick.  This is augmented by a small heating element because when you heat air without a moisture source the RH drops and it picks up more moisture from anything it touches.

For about $5 more you can get the most popular one, and forget about the cheapest one.....

That's a good policy, PF.  I always use the cheap, though, because 100% of the time when I buy a dehydrator it's because my dehydrator broke halfway through drying my mushrooms and FUCK!

One more thing, if you had $1.71¢ until you qualify for free shipping what would you buy from Amazon?

Yea just wanted to throw it out there. It was the least expensive one I could find.

I can also say that it works great, though I don't have much to compare it to.

I also don't know how long it will last.
Figured it was worth a shot at least.

I am happy!

Just type "add on items" and search thru them.......I usually have a cart full of things that have been saved for later.....paperclips, markers, firearm accessories.....anything lol.
