What should I do?
    #2129294 - 11/22/03 05:12 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

Well, I started some jars with the PF Tek on Wednesday, and they already smell like mold. I guess, now that I have a pressure cooker, the best thing to do is to restart. I still have 7 CC's of EQ, and 8 CCs of Mystery flavor? from Ralph. Now that I've done more research though, I'm not sure if I want to just do cakes, or try to make some casings. My question is, I have a pressure cooker, the syringes, 12 half pint jars, and a bag of perlite. What would be the best thing for me to do? I'm on a limited budget too so I wouldn't like to spend more than 10 or 20 dollars.

If you're having difficulties with the PF-Tek, it wouldn't be a waste of time sticking with this tek and trying to grow out of it cuz its definately the easiest way to go.

Once you get a couple of colonized PF jars, you could birth half of them as cakes and use the other half for some casings. Since casings require a bit of practice (even tho some people have success at first try, which was not my case at all), you will at worst have some fruits out of your cakes if your casings go bad.

Another option would be buying some grain, some bigger jars (quart jars) and go with a grain tek. I assume you don't have a lot of experience growing so keep in mind that risk of failure are a bit higher this way, considering the fact you have no other choice than case with grains.

In my opinion, start some new PF jars and work on your sterile techniques.

By the way, you say your jars smell like mold? Do you actually see some mold growing or you just opened your jars and had a sniff? If you don't see anything growing, don't open your jars for no reason since they will most likely contaminate if they are still fine.

good luck.

Well, the problem with my first attemp was lack of a pressure cooker. Other than that everything went smoothly.

I went out and got some 1 pint jars today. I'm gonna try a bird seed tek, which is what I wanted to do from the start, but couldn't due to lack of a pressure cooker. I'm just gonna let the 1/2 pint PF jars live on till I see some mold.

you may want to go with popcorn.  easy as hell and extremly fast.  I find it easier than WBS when it's time to adjust the proper moisture level for your grain.

1- let soak your grain for 24 hours in water.
2- bring to boil and gently simmer for 1 hour.
3- put grain in a strainer and drain for another hour (very important)
4- load your jars at 2/3 and pressure cook at 15 psi for 70 minutes.

here's the link for this tek :

as a filter this works just great. easy and cheap :

Cased popcorn works just great :

good luck

hey I was just gonna do a search for that popcorn tec. lots of folks dig it.

as for John, I say case it. from what I've seen you get more reward for the effort.
and wipe down the incubator. use a bleach solution or lysol the biz-nitch

I always go with coco-coir, since you don't have to adjust PH with this.

Strait verm is probably easier and cheaper. It is known to work well.

You don't have to worry about this for at least 2 weeks so you can still think about it.

The popcorn has been soaking for 12 hours now, and the kernals are noticably bigger:)

watch the water level. popcorn will absorb a lot, especially when you will be boiling the grain for 45 minutes... watch the water level.

don't forget to drain it REALLY WELL.

good luck. popcorn is definately a good way to go.
