Learning agar - Update

While my PF jars are colonizing, I've decided to research Agar and dive in! After a great deal of reading tek after tek, it seems a lot less intimidating than I originally thought, and probably invaluable to a beginner cultivator.
I guess I'm ordering a premixed MEA from a vendor, even though I had already purchased Agar Agar at whole foods. Dextrose, Yeast, and Malt extract are nowhere to be found so far.
150 Tri section plates are on their way to my doorstep as well.
My "dilemma" is deciding what to do first with agar.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
My options would be: 1. Wait for my P. cubensis cakes to fruit, and clone. 2. Clone a wild specimen, possibly Pan. cyanescens or Ganoderma curtisii, to keep it interesting. 3. Germinate from a wild spore print (P. cubensis or Pan. cyanescens). 4. Germinate from a vendor's spore syringe.
I guess my problem is that I want to do all of these things! Haha, but I'd like to have one project at a time until I get the hang of everything.
I have a feeling the syringe would be easiest, but not necessarily the best method in terms of learning proper techniques. I'm worried that with cloning a wild specimen, I might run into too many variables for my first shot at agar. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys!

I'd say fruit then take a little bit of flesh from one of your bigger mushies or whatever attributes your looking for and put that in agar and try to isolate that by the time you do isolate you'll have a couple isolates to test it out so hopefully that keeps you busy
Im just not much into the whole finding wild prints and "cleaning them up" maybe later but just not right now yet for me at least
best of shroomin to you

the most difficult will be wild cloning or wild printing, just contamination wise.
i would put a drop from ur syringe on a plate or two, and clone from ur cake.
u don't need malt, dextrose or yeast. but pre mix is fine, because now u have an easy recipe. with the agar agar powder you already have from whole foods, combine it with 10g dry dog food kibble (crushed to powder) and 500ml tap water. shake, PC, and pour. easiest recipe out there, works for all the above species.
good job on ordering a lot of plates at once. it gets addicting u can store poured plates for a while. 20 plates fit perfectly in a gallon zip lock bag. no fridge required.

Oh cool, the dog food sounds pretty simple. If the plates get here before the MEA, you know what I'll be doing. Haha.
I think I'm going to start with the syringe. I'll have to use a scalpel for the next transfers anyway, so I'll be able to practice my technique regardless. Plus, that way I won't have to worry about initial contamination as much, and I'll only use a few dishes.
I'm pretty exited! Thanks for the advice! I'll keep you guys updated when it all goes down.

awesome man!! good luck
think about ordering non sectioned petris next time. i personally find them way better and easier to pour, and u can still put three wedges on them.

OP, if you're interested in formulating your own agar recipes check the link in my sig. I made it for people who are basically in your situation right now.
If it were me, I'd go with a wild ganoderma clone or a clone of one of your best clusters from a cake. The syringe will work if you're just itching to get something going on agar, though. I know that feeling well.

Update:
Just got my dishes in the mail!
I have everything I need except for an inoculation loop, but I'll just make one out of whatever wire I have laying around.
I've run into a problem though.
My glove box is too short for my 25 count stack of petris!! I was hoping to replicate the techniques from RR's "let's do agar" video, but I guess I have to find another way to seal them up after pouring. Any suggestions?!

Yea man carefully split the plates into a few shorter stacks. Same method for pouring as in the video. Still might be a little hard when you get to the bottom of the bottle, I mix up more agar than I need cause my SAB is short too and that way I dont have to tilt the bottle so high for the last plates
Definitly get a bigger SAB in the future, Im super clumbsy in my small one haha

True.
What do you suggest as far as storage? Should I clingwrap the unused ones and store in a ziplock?

I cling wrap and store in ziplock if Im not going to be using them for a while. But I usually just slide the bag the sleeves come with (the plates from FP come with a nice sterile sleeve inside the packaging) over the plates and store them that way. Especially if Im going to finish that sleeve up relativly quickly.
Im clumbsy though and cling wrap is cheap so I usually wrap. Its preference

Nice.
My main problem was not being able to slide the sleeve over the whole stack because of the SAB height, but I realized that I'll be using some of the dishes right after they're cooled anyways. I'll be able to slide the sleeve over the stack I don't use.
Thanks!
