Here is my Oreocereus celsianus that had developed root root. I cut the rotting area off and as the callous was forming I noticed this darkening area that I'm getting worried about.
I was just wandering if this is normal by any chance or if I should cut it higher.
Also here it is before the cut

If it is as firm as the rest then it is probably ok. Opportunistic moulds can live on the end, not all discolouration is a sign of a problem but just simply (other harmless) life.

I lost big pieces od T.pachanoi Cristate last year (on cristate rot is even worse), and i lost them because i restrained myself at cutting more (the only thing that i saved is a piece that i grafted) now i understand that cutting more than what seems necesary can save the whole piece i don't like the center of the cut being a bit darker than the rest even if the exemplar is a little one, i would cut a bit more

I got a bunch of cuttings from CA that took too long to arrive in the mail and were banged around, so mold got started and rot set in. I had to do a fair amount of surgery and what I found was that the area just outside the rot zone that looks perfectly healthy is not perfectly healthy, it rots a few days later. I like to cut 2-3 inches of "healthy green" when I see rot now. Seems to work. I've probably been through that scenario half a dozen times now.
Your specimen looks halfway decent though, there is a layer of "paper" (which eventaully falls off), that forms over the callus which mold will grow on if given enough moisture. It doesn't hurt the plant though.
I would wait and see on that cutting you have, it might hang tough.

A bunch of cuttings I took during winter began to rot when they were left outside in the cold shade of my carport but forned a solid callous the moment I dried them infront a fan in a sunny bedroom room.
I don't reccomended storing fresh cuttings in the dark because smelly rot grows in dark places like yeast infections.
Your oreocereus looks healthy enough to salvage but I still recommend speeding the drying process up with a fan.
I've been drying the rotted sections for a week and will continue drying them until the confidence is there that the rot won't strike again.
Don't use a heater to dry out the cactus or it will turn cracker dry , I made that mistake a few weeks ago and dehydrated the ribs.
Do you have the cactus in cactus mix (coco , perlite) or is it in regular potting soil ?
I haven't experienced root rot and was wondering if it came from the soil not draining quick enough,

Well I bought it and started knocking the soil off which seemed like cactus mix but it was still moist in the center so I think it had to do with the moisture IMO.

If you can keep them in a room with relative humidity of 55 or less, that's been working good for me, even in the dark at night. Nice clean callouses every time for me. Mold is inhibited below RH of 60.

well I went ahead and cut more off of my Oreocereus celsianus and it wasn't good below the callous. Here's what I found

And this is the amount I had to take off of it to clean it off.

So I now have about a 2" cutting to work with so I'm guessing he's done for
