Growing Without A Fruiting Chamber 19

I see a lot of people wondering how i did this so thought a write up may do some good, many of you know i went almost a year with out using a fruiting chamber at all just simply giving my substrates a casing layer and misting as needed or even watering my substrates, this includes pan species cubes libs and gymnopilus species i did.
The thing to remember(which is something i find misunderstood) is that the most important humidity you have is surface humidity, in other words it really doesn't matter if your fc has a rh of 40% or 99% as long as there is room for evaporation to take place the humidity that is important sits on the surface.
This is our goal with every fruiting chamber we use is surface humidity, with our monotubs we dial them in to achieve this, with our sgfc's we mist as needed to achieve this, with our gh's we (depending on your set up)use something like an ultrasonic humidifier as a timed mister to achieve this because once we have this we can focus on fae which is a great tool for everything your substrate wants for many reasons, the more the better
The reason we grow in a high humidity environment is simple, mushrooms have no skin and lose moisture to the environment very easily and if they lose more then is being pumped in they simply die. This is an easy fix just simply misting your fruits
Which leads me to my adventures with no fruiting chamber The process is as simple as ever and done with any basic growing tek...i used grain spawn and a coir bulk substrate(just coir no verm or gysum added, none was available)
2 qt's of spawn were used to spawn to 4 qt's of sterilized coir, once it was fully colonized i simply added about 1/4 inch more of sterilized coir and introduced to fruiting conditions once it was about 30% colonized but you can simply fruit it right away with the same results as cubes are very aggresive and that does not take long at all anyway.
from this point on it is as simple as keeping that casing layer nice and moist, all i did was put my sub by a nice bright window on the table and shut any fans off, once i could see the top layering drying out i just simply mist again till it's covered in nice beads of moisture, surprisingly this would still take 3-4 hours at a time to take place but i'm sure this will differ from one spot to the next. come night time i would simply cover it up with a plastic bag or something with some holes in it(dark cycle anyway) and give it love in the morning.
Within a few days my substrates knot up/pin and it is as simple as i stated already...mist as needed, they love all the fresh air/evaporation they get and treated me well.

as long as you can keep this up you should see no low rh related issues arise

Other no fc grows of mine...

(this one you can see i failed to mist a few times lol)

(the result of over misting can be be bacterial blotching)

 GOOD LUCK!

This is great info, thanks for sharing. I've got five treasure coast cakes about a week into consolidation so they are probably ready to birth dunk and roll. But my fruiting chamber is full. I've been kinda lazy lately cause my stash of homegrown reserves is bigger than it normally is so I don't "need" to grow. So basically I'm trying to think of a fun project to use with these cakes. This just might be the ticket.

Care to elaborate? Evaporation is one reason, is more evaporation better? How much evaporation is best?
To take it to an absurd extreme: if you take that tray and put a fan on it so that you have to mist almost non-stop to keep it moist, what would happen?
Are there other reasons besides evaporation?

The more evaporation the merrier. Evaporation of moisture from the substrate is a direct effect of fresh air coming in contact with the substrate, and visa-versa.
Your scenario happens in nature all the time. The zone I live in is windy, but humid at the same time. Even when it is cold.
I hate the place where I currently reside, but if I were a mushroom, I would love it.

Why do you cover it at night? Is it because you can't mist?

But what do you do for FAE if you don't have holes every 2" on all six sides?
