Fractional sterilization Water content

If your heating for consecutive times how do you calculate water content? Won't more water be lost in each heating period. I.e. -Single sterilization 1 pint = 100g rye/105g water. -Fractional sterilization 1 pint = 100g rye/??? water.

Usually you can use the same amounts. And as always:
" It?s best to make a batch of test jars when one acquires a new grain for instance 100g rye and 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120g water. Then you?ll see which water content provides the best result."

Ok thanks Anno. Gonna do some tests and find the right water amount for sure. Gonna try 110g and 120g think that should be the ones.

you could weigh the jars to see how much you have lost

I am testing this at the moment. added exactly 1kg millet to a litre of water in a bag so it all weighs 2kg. i microwaved it for 30mins. will do 2-3 more times incubating in between for a day or 2. keep boiling until it is 1.75kg then i will add 50ml of liquid innoc to bring it up to the recommended 80ml/100g millet. the more millet the better as it makes the % error in using a household scale less. I could have fit twice that amount in a bag in the microwave, no chance in a household PC. any forseeable problems??

>keep boiling until it is 1.75kg
This could very well result in a thick mush....be careful with additing too much water to grain.

i have already microwaved it with 1 litre and it seems fine. it formed some clumps which were easily mixed back in. when it dries a bit more i would expect hot spots in the microwave will be a problem so i will take it out and shake a bit.

When you boil you need to have a lid on the pot. The humidity in the pot will stop most moisture loss. I fractional steralized a bunch of WBS jars, 30mim boil then a day to sit x3, so far 20% colonization no contams and the moisture seems good. I microwaved one jar and it came out way too dry i had to have a layer of water at the bottom to keep the moisture in.

good to hear its going well, keep us informed. the microwave way is very easy and most have a microwave, i dont have a pot big enough for what i can fit in the microwave. i had the bag closed a bit and the pressure blew it up and stretched the bag. i put it in another and just folded the top over. i microwaved it for about 20mins and it is now down to 1.6kg. so i will either have to add more water for the last heating or add lots of liquid innoc

You cant heav it sealed, and like i said having a layer of extra water is good. My jars i innoculated with about 1/4 of water at the bottom because i couldnt drain it al out. After some colonization, shaking it spread all the moisture out and now theres no pooling at the bottom anymore. Make sure the water is boiled a bit just in case, though most tap water is sterile.

most tap water wont be sterile but is easily sterilised by boiling. i added 300ml to my bag and microwaved again so it is at 1.85kg. i will microwave down to 1.75 again and then seal the bag and microwave on low power so it blows up just a bit but doesnt stretch. this will make sure the inside is sterile.
