Not colonizing
    #2128516 - 11/21/03 11:03 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

this is my first attempt at growing and 3 of my 12 jars aren't colonizing. Is there anything that I can do to get them started?
Thanks

How long has it been? What substrate are you using? How big are the jars? Are your inoculation points covered by tape?

Patience. I don't know why they wouldn't be colonizing after that long.

How far along are the other jars?

You could have not waited long enough and they could have been too hot still when you innoculated.. Or the spores may have simply not been enough (too diluted) to germinate the jars. Usualy I found the reason most people have problems with growth is they are too eager and inject when it is still too hot and they kill the spores. Then again i've seen spores start germinating after 3 weeks to 5 weeks before..

That wouldn't make sense for him though...if nine of his jars are growing that probably isn't the problem.

I would honestly say wait. Cloud9 is right, spores can suddenly pop up after extremely long periods of time.

well considering it is your first attempt and 9/12 are colonizing, without any further information from you I'd say that isn't too bad...my first attempt I got 2/12 jars to colonize, and only at 1 of the 4 innoculation points so it took like 45 days to fully colonize. you'll get better w/ practice, no worries, but more info needed to make a judgement now...

My friends first try he had all 12 colonize but 2 got contaminated. and the ones that were ok also only colonized at 1 point per jar so it took 6 weeks for them to fully colonize...

there may not have been enough spores in there. if your syringe was too dilute (where'd you get it?) or you didn't use enough (how much did you use?) that could be the problem... the other possibility is that some kind of bacterial contamination whacked those jars. in that case they'd probably smell pretty funk. every time i've ever gotten bacteria it's been a sortof sick sweet smell.

you can be happy that 9 jars are colonising.

did you shake your syringe after each jar?

Tempeture seems to be the main factor slowing growth down. for cubie's keep it at 80-85 F and you're golden. Personally I prefer 80 since the jars generate thier own heat and will be a few degrees warmer than the rest of the incubator. By far the best hunidifier's are the double rubbermaid containers with water and fish heater in the bottom one. humidity isn't really a factor here but you don't want anything that will cause the jars to dry out

Could also be water content in the jars to dry and they'll never grow, to wet and everything turns to mud and won't grow. The real trick is getting em to fruit. Once you get your first harvest everything starts to fall into place really well and it gets easier each time.
