it's not like we're arguing this because we're on RRs dick, it's just that the vast majority of our own experiences and seeing other peoples pictures/experiences reflects RR's quotes as well. RR is not god sure but some of his quotes come from understanding rather than him just talking shit

RR is one of the very few who dedicated time to controlled experiments, hard not to quote that sometimes.

Well if you guys are going to argue a point and stand up for it, I think that those ppl should have some kind of experience in the matter not just go off what someone else has said. Try it, spawn, colonize and pin under extreme lighting, once pinning starts, move tub to complete darkness, check on it once a day to make the experiment "fair", maybe give it a camera flash every couple of days as I did and see what kind of results you get. Then come argue your point.

I kinda see light to cube mushrooms as vitamins to me. Sure, I will be fine if I skip on the vitamins but I could be healthier and better protected against illness with the vitamins. Cubes function better with some light.

the sunlight on cloudy days, 6000 K; in the shade 8000 K24. Most wild mushrooms grow in the shade.
between 480 and 460 nm and Fig. 6 suggests that we can expect 150 to 200 lumens per Watt in that waveband. Looking back at Fig. 5, we notice that chlorophyll a does not absorb those wavelengths, while chlorophyll b absorbs between 5 and 100 on the absorption coefficient scale. Since most mushrooms known to require light are found under trees, light that is not absorbed by the leaves is more able to reach the mushrooms. There is another factor influencing the light: shorter wavelengths are more efficiently scattered, so the blue light is scattered and re-scattered and moves easily through the leaves6 . Plants and fungi absorb mainly the blue-light spectrum because it provides a greater source of photon energy, independently of the purpose

It is my understanding that a light in the blue spectrum diffused evenly across your cropping surface will aid in achieving an ubiquitous pin-set over the cropping surface. It is also my experience that lighting plays a role in fruit body development. However, I can not substantiate those assertions.

Recent advances in fungal photobiology using molecular tools and genomic analysis have shown specific phytochromes, photoreceptor proteins, transcription factors, light-regulated genes, and to a certain extent common regulatory pathways leading to mushroom development and spore viability. Several blue-light and red-light absorbing photoreceptors receive photons and transduce the photon energy into the cell to regulate fungal photoresponses through differential gene expression, e.g. carotenoid biosynthesis, hyphal aggregation, primordia formation, and mushroom differentiation4,18. Similar processes are expected to occur in commercially cultivated mushrooms, such as Pleurotus, Lentinula, and Ganoderma. Light-regulated genes seem to be widespread in fungal genomes, showing the relevance of light not only in fungal metabolism, but also in sexual and asexual development7,17. It seems likely that all mushrooms, which require light, use a common regulatory pathway for basidioma development. However, interesting is the case of those species that do not require light for fruiting, such as Agaricus bisporus, because it is not known yet if they have inactive light absorbing photoreceptors or alternative mechanisms. Then we can expect that the active photoreceptor(s) absorbs light

P. Cubensis is said to be a photosensitive species, and experiments have been done long ago to substantiate this.
"THE EFFECT OF LIGHT UPON BASIDIOCARP INITIATION IN PSILOCYBE CUBENSIS." Mycologia. Vol. 72, No. 1. (Jan. - Feb., 1980), pp. 136-142. Abstract: Formation of basidiocarp initials in Psilocibe cubensis occurred only when cultures were illuminated. Short durations of light (0.0025 sec of xenon-arc flash) were sufficient for initiation. Light-induced initiation was saturated at a dose of 0.345 x l04 ergs/cm2 at 460 nm. UV and blue wavelengths of 370, 440, and 460 nm were the most effective. Green and red wavelengths greater than 510 nm were ineffective. Here is the PDF detailing the experiments and findings: http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/3759426?sid=21105879857263&uid=4&uid=2&uid=3739936&uid=3739256
It is interesting to note that the exposure time necessary to stimulate pin-head initiation was merely half a millisecond per day. Perhaps people who claim that they have successfully fruited P. Cubensis completely bereft of light, may have unwittingly provided it, albeit to a minute extent.

Cubes don't grow under ground in nature. They evolved with the sun as any other edible mushroom. Why it would be an exception. And good luck trying to find an article mentioning cubensis.
