How long can colonized spawn sit?
    #21283969 - 02/16/15 04:38 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all. I have 50 lbs of rye almost fully colonized. My previous batch is still colonizing the substrate in 10x20 propagation trays. From my previous experience, my trays fruit for about 4 to 5 weeks before I throw them out. At this rate, by the time I consolidate, case, and start fruiting, my myco bags will be fully colonized. I can transfer them to substrate, but I have no room in my FC. I also plan to do another g2g transfer at that time, but that will mean that my 3rd batch will be colonized on rye before my 1st batch is done fruiting.

How long can colonized spawn sit in bags, and how long can colonized substrate sit in trays before I have to start worrying about contams? I'm sure somebody has addressed this problem before, but didn't see any real solutions in previous threads.

What should I do about having more spawn than my FC can handle? Should I transfer to substrate and allow it to consolidate for a month or two till I have room? Should I leave it in bags so that it doesn't get exposed to contams? Any info or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Colonized bags can last a long time, they'll pin invitro at the worst (and still be viable to be spawned) but they won't go bad . What makes you say two weeks?

if you put them in the fridge you can get quite a lot of time

I was joking sorta. theres no telling exactly how long. I just think two weeks of consolidating then pinning will commence although I didn't take into account the size of the substrate

if it's colonized you should not worry about contams either.

I've had jars for way more then two weeks sitting at room temperature not pin .

Like Bod said put it in the fridge.

I dont get pinning in grain jars even after months (3-4) in room temp

the myc gets slow tho and its starting to eat the nutes you wanna save for fruiting time.

Well I'm using rye jars for the first time right now so this is useful info. I i'll admit I don't know what I'm talking about with rye.

I have 4 quart jars each about 10 percent done. and 4 pounds of manure waiting to be spawned. I was planing on doing two tubs. one manure and one 50/50 manure straw.

In this hobby you'll receive much less backlash if you only comment on things you know.

You met three nice shroomery members, it may not go so well next time.

Just a word of advice.

Cool, so if I keep them in the bags at room temperature, they should last a couple of months? (I'd have to buy 2 full sized refrigerators to hold all of them) Should I keep them in the dark to reduce chances of invitro fruiting? Cause they are in the same room as my Martha greenhouses.

light doesn't cause pinning them being ready having enough moisture and the conditions being at least kind of suitable starts pinning. I would put them in the fridge.

:whathesaid:
i would stick them in fridge dude

although if u had to keep them at room temp, i personally would keep in the dark.
but if u have to keep them for months...i would just make new spawn in a few months.

50 lbs of spawn, soon to be 100 lbs after my next g2g transfer. Wish I had room in the fridge.

I think I'll wait till batch 1 finishes 2nd flush and transfer batch 2 to sub. Then wait till batch 2 finishes 2nd flush and transfer batch 3 to sub. That way the spawn will only have to consolidate for a month or so. G2G just colonized too fast to keep up with. I need about 8 more Marthas to do this right.

I only do g2g twice per batch. 50 lbs rye makes 24 bags from 1 petri dish. I grow out 23 of them and g2g the last one to 24 new bags. Then I g2g 1 more time. It saves my agar so my master culture lasts longer. They just colonize too fast.
