Pressure Cooker + Vaseline Issue

So I think I over did it on my All American 921 with the Vaseline. Now the jars all come out feeling like theres a thin film of Vaseline on the jars I've PC'D and any jars that are on the top layer of my PC have residue showing up on the lids. Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean out the PC / what to use to clean it out? I'm afraid I'm ruining the jars I'm PCing and won't know clearly unless I try to inoculate them.

Washing it with soap might do the trick.

Ammonia based cleaners are really good on grease. Sometimes if I need to wash especially oily dishes I'll put a few drops of ammonia in the water. Might could be able to just hit the inside of the PC with some Windex then rinse it out with hot water after?

Dish soap is made to cut through grease.

Vaseline isn't made to cook with.

You don't often have to wash Vaseline off what you cooked your breakfast in. If thisisfielding wants all traces of grease gone, ammonia will remove more grease more quickly and more completely than dish soap.

It's just a petroleum based jelly. WD40 would work too if soap or ammonia didn't.

WD40 being mostly solvent and some unnamed kind of light oil, thus not removing all traces of oil but replacing one oil with another.

i use vasoline chap stick on my AA rim. the little stick makes it easy to apply, and hard to over apply. use a dry paper towel, slide it along the rim, and that will remove most of the excess, but still leave the thin layer that you want. u must have applied a lot for it to be affecting ur jars during a cycle.

The only place I've ever put Vaseline was on the outside, to make it close more smoothly. Never on the inside of the PC. At least, I never do that

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly#Clean-up
Quote:
Clean-up Petroleum jelly is very sticky and hard to remove from non-biological surfaces with the usual and customary cleaning agents typically found in the home. It may be dissolved with paint thinner or other petroleum solvents such as acetone,[18] which dissolves most plastics.
Petroleum jelly is slightly soluble in alcohol.[19] To avoid damage to plastics as well as minimize ventilation issues, isopropyl rubbing alcohol can be used to remove petroleum jelly from most surfaces. Isopropyl alcohol is inert to most household surfaces, including almost every plastic, and removes petroleum jelly efficiently. While alcohol causes fewer ventilation problems than petroleum solvents, ventilation is still recommended, especially if large surface areas are involved.
Petroleum jelly is also soluble in lower molecular weight oils. Using an oil to dissolve the petroleum jelly first can render it more soluble to solvents and soaps that would not dissolve pure petroleum jelly. Vegetable oils such as canola and olive oil are commonly used to aid in the removal of petroleum jelly from hair and skin.

I have never used vaseline on my 921, it just seems like it would be messy. I've used my pc several times for cooking and sterilization and never had a problem removing the lid. I would ditch the vaseline unless the lid sticks without it.

i use it. i have an old cooker i got used. the owner did not use vasoline so i have to use a hammer to bang the wing nuts loose. vasoline helps maintain the metal to metal seal, and is actually recommended by All American in the instruction manual for proper maintenance.
like i said above, i just use those shitty cheap small chap stick sticks u get at any grocer/conveinent store by the register. un cap it, slide along the angled part of the inside of the cooker base, and then occasionally, below the wing nuts, and ur golden. does not need to be done each cook, but depending on how much u use it, once a week or once every two weeks is ideal. the manual suggest using olive oil as an alternative to vasoline.

They state in the manual provided by All American that using Vaseline is recommended in avoiding damage to the seal during storage and operation.
I follow directions provided by the manufacturer, it seems to work just fine. My jars come out clean because I only use enough to lubricate the seal and distilled water instead of tap, the thin layer of Vaseline stays where I apply it for a few cycles. Every 3-5 cycles, I will wipe off the old layer and apply a new one. I rinse my PC out every few cycles and give it a good clean every once in a while as stated in the manual as well.
By the way, jars don't need to be clean, they just need to be sterile; that film your talking about is probably coming from the hard water you use, not the Vaseline.
