why would you want to grow slime molds?  what kind?  i wrote my final college bio paper on myxomycetes and from what I recall they just grow them on wet wood in petris.  not all are cultivatable this way, though.

I wanted to play around with some this summer, pulled out some nice fractally bright yellow slime mold from the trash growing on cardboard, meant to look up how to grow it but never did and it dried out. In this case wouldn't it be possible to use wet cardboard in the petri instead of wood since the original was on cardboard?

I'm sure it would grow on cardboard just fine. I grew one in a college Bio class and I fed it oatmeal flakes, like 1 or 2 at a time and it got pretty big until my cat got into it.

Sounds like we're playing D&D.

"These large masses act like giant amoebas, creeping slowly along and engulfing food particles along the way. If a slime mold aggregate is diced up, the pieces will pull themselves back together. The blobs can navigate and avoid obstacles and if a food source is placed nearby, they seem to sense it and head unerringly for it. "

I know right? If I ever find a gelatinous cube in real life....well lets just say I'll be rather happy.

For now I'm just going to grow them in various different conditions. See for myself how they react to different stimuli.

I'm curious what they do when they're not massed into one blob (since they blob together only to feed, spending the rest of their time as single cell fragments. as far as we know anyway) And also if they interact with plant roots or fungi while they're down there.
