Your favorite cultures and why?
    #21268715 - 02/13/15 12:08 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Not fungal cultures.

I like Celtic and Native American cultures largely for their reverence of nature as well as being warrior societys. That, and an acceptance of mind-altering substances.

I find most cultures pretty interesting. I am intrigued by some aspects of many tribal societies, though I don't know enough about most to pick out actual favorites.
I find the mesoamerican cultures fascinating, although I would NOT want to live in one. Ancient Greece, Carthage, Celtic tribes all interest me too. And the Australian Aboriginals are quite cool to me.

Forgot Mesoamericans! Absolutely fascinated by their religion and all the theories of their involvement with other cultures and big-headed aliens. That, and some badass architecture.

Cultures I don't like and find stupid:

-Arabic cultures
-Mexican cultures
-Indian (asian indian) cultures

Savages. Except for the mexicans, mexicans actually seem pretty cool now that I think about it.

As for cultures I don't like as much/or just aren't interested in... pretty well all the cultures based around Abrahamic religions, just because they are too familiar or also too recently/currently fucked up

I find German culture fascinating. I love reading most things related to Germany. I find the history interesting (I've been obssessed with learning about WW2 recently), how they supposedly have a strong work ethic and are punctual, how they have a word for someone who's face cries out for a fist (backfeifengesicht), that they hide a pickle ornament in their christmas tree, Krampus (the opposite of Santa, he drags children to hell and beats them) and Krampuslauf (Krampus run).

Here's a picture of people dressed up for Krampuslauf

It looks like a vegan's nightmare, but it still looks like a really fun time.

I've never been there though. Hopefully, I'll get to see Germany and Austria one day.

One thing I hate is the grammar of the language. All the cases, genders and their words strung together into super words (ex.Generalstaatsverordnetenversammlungen). I'm not interested in the music that's currently popular, but who doesn't like Bach and Beethoven?

Why do they hide a pickle ornament? That sounds like a fun idea. I might dry a pickle this summer and hide it in there next x-mas, if I remember

I really like Huichol, Hung Gar Kuen, and Zaphorozian Cossack culture.

My high school German teacher told my class that the child that finds the pickle ornament in the tree gets an extra present and/or a year of good fortune. I have looked it up before and apparently a lot of Germans don't know of this tradition. There are a few different stories on how it started

I have to get a pickle ornament when I get a christmas tree one year.

There is also an old tradition of putting your shoe outside the door and if you're good St. Nicholas leaves you candy and things in your shoe.
