ISIS vs Saudi Arabia
    #21268084 - 02/13/15 08:57 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So I have encountered the following pic:

It's funny, mainly because the west condemns ISIS for being so primitive, while half of the world paid respect to King Abdullah's death. The west licks Saudi Arabia's ass, forgetting all its own standards and principles of a modern society, in order to get oil.

Id say thats incorrect in that nobody just 'forgets' about how atrocious their beliefs and ways are in most of the Middle East.

ISIS poses a threat against our homeland in the US, so its a hot topic.

Funny how ISIS dominates the news when the threat, realistically and proportionally, is tiny. How often do you hear news stories about how to live a healthier lifestyle to prevent the one million US citizens that die every year from heart disease and cancer which is about 80% preventable/mitigatable? Much more of a threat than ISIS, yet no coverage. It's a hot topic because it sells well and is inflated by the media, not because it's legitimately a major threat. They are a minor force that's pissed off three of the largest military forces on the planet, do you really think they are going to do that much damage before they get wiped out? Even if another 9/11 happens, that's peanuts compared to the aforementioned million. Tragic? Yes...but if this is really about the reduction of human suffering, we have other issues that in reality are far more center stage than the sole threats of ISIS and Ebola that many media outlets would convince you of.

Terrorism abroad and home is not a legitimate threat?

That's not my point, my point is highly disproportionate media coverage and resource allocation. This:

Simple water quality and nutrition issues that kill millions of kids worldwide per year could be solved for far less than we've spent fighting terrorism.

There are threats everywhere in the world...this country would be in mass hysterics if people had proportional reactions to other more lethal threats as they do terrorism. Where's the trillions spent on air quality, alcohol abuse, and suicide prevention?

We as a country always prioritize external military threats, no matter how trivial they are in comparison to our domestic problems. What's the result? A government in tremendous debt to a shaky financial system, 175,000 Iraqi/Afghani civilians dead as collateral damage, and soldiers coming home to crippling mental/emotional struggles that take more lives than combat or terror attacks.

As far as Saudi oil is concerned, that's what, 20% of our oil imports. We get most of our oil domestically and from countries on this continent.

Tobacco, obesity, alcohol and suicide are personal exercises of freedom.  Children under 5 all causes?  What the fuck kind of stupid point are you trying to make there?

Nice link, by the way.  I have no idea what those numbers mean.

So if you have a friend die from suicide, and another died in the Boston bombing, you would be completely okay with the former, and not the latter? Doubtful.

People hardly choose to have suicidal depression.

My point is that when we justify over and over again whittling down medical research funding that makes progress on most of the above mortality risks, while justifying spending trillions on a war to prevent the tiny number of terrorism victims, that there is no shred of logic or reason being used.

We spend far more on domestic programs than on the military

There is nothing shaky about our financial system and the military isn't the cause of our debt.

Complete bullshit.

http://www.npr.org/2012/04/11/150444802/where-does-america-get-oil-you-may-be-surprised. ; 8% from Saudi Arabia and that is because they don't have shit for refinery capacity.  We are middle men, mostly, for Saudi oil.

Um, yeah.  One is murder and the other is a personal choice

So?  What if they have terminal cancer and are in constant pain?  Suicide is often a rational response.

Nanny fascist crap? For fucks sake you really jump to conclusions after reading nothing more than a few paragraphs. I'm not for the government involving themselves in everyone's life, far from it. You don't encourage people to live healthy lives by making bad shit illegal, that's just infantile.

Yes we spend a lot on social programs, I'm not saying we should indiscriminately cut military spending for the sake of all current social programs, as many of them are garbage. I'm more referring to research funding, which as of late in most fields has been cut or plateau'd, though I guess military budget has run the same trend recently.

Excuse me, suicides at home haven't outpaced combat terror attacks yet, just combat deaths. Regardless, that's more than a little fucked. In regards to the civilian deaths: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/15/iraq-death-toll_n_4102855.html. There's tons and sources on this subject.

What a crock of shit

Quote:

The latest estimate by university researchers in the United States, Canada and Baghdad in cooperation with the Iraqi Ministry of Health covers not only violent deaths but other avoidable deaths linked to the invasion, insurgencies and subsequent social breakdown.

It also differs from some previous counts by spanning a longer period of time and by using randomized surveys of households across Iraq to project a nationwide death toll from 2003 to mid 2011.

Subsequent social breakdown.  Breakdown from what?  Saddam's kite flying nirvana.  These people are idiots.

https://www.iraqbodycount.org/

Most casualties are due to our opponents, not us.  I suppose you think we should have let him enslave and murder the Kuwaitis.

The only big research funding the government should be doing is into fusion research.  It is mankind's only hope.

Without the US military investment Japan and Taiwan and all of SE Asia would be China, Europe would be SSRs.  I have no idea what South America would be.  Probably a bunch of failed states like Venezuela only worse because they don't all have huge oil reserves.  The Middle East would be a simmering cesspool of lunatic douchewads like it is now but the only Jews left alive will be those living in the US.

You still have not provided a link for that graph.

People weren't scared of alqaeda anymore so they had to create new boogymen.

Good thing 'we' supported those syrian rebels back before the days of isis...
