Kiln dried hardwood sawdust?
    #21268208 - 02/13/15 09:36 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Good morning, I am in the process of trying to start a small Shiitake grow. I have the spawn coming along nicely in rye grain and plan on using a 70/30 mix of pasteurized wheat straw and hardwood sawdust as substrate.

My question is, I have a good supply of hardwood sawdust, the wood has been kiln dried, is this OK to use and does it need to be pasteurized or sterilized or is the kiln drying process enough to kill the nasty critters?

Thanks for any input. Jeremy

PS. I did a site search but could not find anything about kiln drying...?

That is basically what fuel logs/pellet/briquettes are.

See Lipa's fuel pellet tec.

Thanks for that, I did have a read of it earlier but it is a reasonably old thread and not quite the info I was looking for. It does not specifically mention kiln dried sawdust, I understand some wood pellets are kiln dried but some are not and the composition of pellets varies as to types of wood and that tek is not what I am trying to do.

I have loose Alder sawdust from kiln dried boards and I will be mixing it with wheat straw, I was planning on mixing 70% straw with 30% sawdust so I can control the water content, I have to pasteurize the straw, (I cold pasteurize) so I wanted to know if I needed to sterilize the sawdust first or just pasteurize with the straw? Thanks.

If you have no additional supplementation you can pasteurise the lot if you want to grow something aggressive like an Oyster.

However Shiitake is usually too slow for pasteurised substrate so you will need to sterilise both, at which point you may as well add some bran!
